Did you install Win 11? How to install it on X300?

#1 Post by Insomniac1971 » Thu Jan 13, 2022 5:05 pm

Hi folks, I wonder if this is even possible.

How did you get it installed:

Did you have to have win10 installed first in order to edit registry?

Or did you do a fresh install and wiped the HDD/SSD?

Which Product key did you use, did you have one from win7 or from win 10 or did you have a retail product key?

I have an Thinkpad X300, it had windows 7 pro on it when I bought it, and a windows 7 Pro Product key under the battery, so used that Product key to do a fresh install of win 10 and activate it. I didn't like win 10 and there were things not working, like mouse scroll, sound problems. So I wiped the SSD and installed Xubuntu and have been happy with it, now running Linux Mint 20.2.

Just wondering if I would like Win 11, so my question is : Would my Win 7 Pro Product key - which were used to activate win 10 -, be able to activate win 11 fresh install?

Or do I need to install win 10 first and then upgrade that one to win 11?

With kind regard
Jan

Create the install disk with rufus.ie and enable the bypass requirements check option. You should be able to use your Windows 7 key, but if not you can always use various FOSS scripts to hacktivate.

How I install Windows 11 on Core 2 duo machines is I just use the standard Windows media creation tool to create the bootable USB.
You know how you are supposed to add 2 registry entries during the setup to bypass the TPM and Secure boot checks? I just end up writing those changes in a .reg file, and every time the setup's welcome screen appears, all I need to do is to press Shift+F10 to open command prompt, and then simply open the .reg file, let the Windows setup environment import those registries and then continue as usual.

Am I reading this correctly? Do you intend to run Windows 11... on an SL7100?

Are you masochist or something?

MikeMex -

I can't help but agree. I've been using W10 for years on T-61's, T-420's, T-520's and W-520's and at this point it is rock-stable.

I was recently given a new "Brand D" laptop, under-powered with 256 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM, and W11 Home to configure.

After a 1 TB SSD and 16 GB RAM transpant, I flailed about trying to make something out of the W11 Start Menu and Taskbar. (Best approximation was "Explorer Patcher" with Open-Shell layered over it, "StartAllBack" did not "play well" with Open Shell.) I gave up, got a copy of W10 Pro, and with the help of Open Shell went back to the old XP UI that I love.

The only thing I can see to "sell" Win11 so far is that it will run Android Apps... seriously! And even that, I understand, is half-baked until release 22H2.

My advice to the owner of the "D" was to stick with W10 until, you guessed it, Win11 22H2 when M$ has "promised" to fix the Taskbar and several other UI issues.

Windrows 10 UI certainly is User Hostile, a mess with less capability for troubleshooting.
