Win10 and UEFI

From what I read today, it seems like Win10 in it's final form will require secure boot, which in turn seem to require UEFI v2.3.1.

The only change between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 for system requirements on the desktop is the mandate of UEFI v2.3.1. Windows 8.1 was required to have UEFI v2.3.1 for Secure Boot, but this was an optional feature. In Windows 10 this is no longer optional.

So if this becomes reality, does that mean that Win10 won't be able to run on any Thinkpad older than the Tx20 generation? I was a little surprised to see this, as this closes the door for lots of capable hardware to upgrade to Win10.

Edit: After discussing this with another user, we made the conclusion this might be a requirement for vendors who will be selling new Win10 certified computers, and not for retail or upgrade versions. It will be interesting to see.

No problems experienced upgrading my X220 to Windows 10 (non-UEFI).

As and when I do a clean install, I will probably play around with UEFI, but at the moment everything works fine.

Definitely not a requirement for a clean install on an older system. It's quite possible that it'll be mandated on new offerings from OEMs.

I just upgraded an ancient Dell Precision m6300 and it upgraded with no issues at all.

So UEFI is not a requirement for upgrades at the least.
