Windows 10 on the T43 - Nice!

#1 Post by Xenomorph » Wed Jul 29, 2015 11:33 pm

I've been running the final build of Windows 10 on my T43, and it so far has been working well. Even the fingerprint scanner works!

One issue: Windows 10 will not load the drivers for "IBM ThinkPad Fast Infrared Port".

Error:
"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"

It's using the 2006 / Vista drivers.

Since I've never used that device in the first place, I went ahead and disabled it in BIOS.

For the ATI X300, I'm using the modded Vista drivers, as well.

For the "Winbond Trusted Platform Module 1.1", I'm using the dummy driver I made for Windows 8:
http://xenomorph.net/data/drivers/t43tpm_0.1.zip

I've gone from Windows XP to Vista to 7 to 8 to 8.1 and now Windows 10 on this thing.

Were you able to install the Power Manager? Do Hotkeys work?

Hotkeys work. On-screen volume control, WiFi and Bluetooth toggles, etc.

Power Manager seems to work. It even put that ugly battery meter on the taskbar.

Very early in the year I loaded the 10 Preview but it was sluggish. I think Windows 7 is usable on the T43 with X300 .
Those modded drivers I believe you introduced Xenomorph are a godsend for the "old girl".

This post recommends downloading the ThinkPad System Update:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T ... d-p/195566

There are multiple versions available on this page, for Windows 2000/XP/Vista 7/8/8.1 and 10:

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht080136

I'm surprised Device Manager doesn't allow you to download the driver automatically, I've been doing that since Windows 98.

I have installed Windows 10 on my T60p, and I'm facing the exact same problem. The "IBM Thinkpad Fast Infrared Port" doesn't work. Everything else works just fine.

I've tried changing DMA, IRQ etc. for the infrared device manually in BIOS, but can't get it to work.

No working driver probably as IR comms were rather odd versions of tty.

For the record, IR worked just fine in Windows 7, 8, 8.1. It's the Microsoft signed driver from National Semiconductor. Given that all the other quirky driver issues with windows 8/8.1 is is still resolved in the same way on Windows 10 (at least for me), I find this rather odd.

These drivers are natively supplied by Microsoft through windows update.

I never got IR to work, so I just disabled it in BIOS. I've never once used it, so "not having it" is better than a yellow mark in Device Manager.

I got the Infrared driver working on my T43 under W10 but the infrared function in Windows 10 is removed. I used the driver extracted from WinVista by myself which worked on Win7.
Cortana sometimes work sometimes it does not catch your speech entirely. Fast boot requires you to turn off the screen by the sleep combination after startup to get the screen working.

Windows 10 is now running on 1 of my T43's and with the latest build it is ok. Definitely a performance upgrade from Windows 7. Don't throw away your T43 just yet.

Using it temporarily to stream a TV channel with the Edge browser and there is no stutter and it's quite fluid. Tried this with Chrome and its Shockwave Flash Plugin crashes apart from being sluggish. Also tried with Firefox and Firefox didn't crash but streaming would pause.

Using Xenomorph's Vista drivers and they are working flawlessly. Although the Modder wouldn't work in Windows 10 so I had an XP machine and copied the drivers and modded them in XP and then copied to the ATI directory in Windows 10.

Hotkeys working fine and it's only been a couple of hours but it looks like the T43 lives on. As on my X301 basically all telemetry turned off and running barebones but the T43 is using the Edge Browser while the X301 uses Chrome.

I will activate most of my hardware on Windows 10 before the free upgrade expires. I will still keep Windows 7 availability though.

Well I decided to pick this old thread up because I finally found a way to actually get the screen up and running right after a "fast startup" with the Windows Vista driver from Lenovo website.
This applies to all ATI T43 models as well as many other models by other brands that has Radeon X family graphics adapter or FireGL adapter.
original issue: if you use fast startup in Windows 8 and up for the above devices, you get a blank display unless you somehow refresh the monitor by turning it off and back on.
Original solution: use a monitor off software such as nircmd, add it to startup menu, and it will turn off the monitor after everything is up and running. However, at times it seems to turn off the display quiet a lot of times and can be annoying when you want it up quick.
New solution: re-calibrate your display under colour management (just slightly change the gamma and RGB intensity will do). Then the next time right after you enter your log on information (or fingerprint), the new display profile will be applied and refreshes the display; and as I said before, when you refresh the display, the display comes right on and everything works just fine after that!

Dug out the old T43 recently and put in a Transcend 128GB SSD, so I felt like giving Windows 10 a try... everything appears to be working well, and it runs amazingly for an 11 year old laptop; however I did have to use a Vista driver and install it manually with compatibility mode and install a dummy driver for the TPM to avoid the ! in Device Manager, did run into a minor issue with a blank screen but that can be worked around by using hibernate rather than shut down

see the previous post for my workarounds to that issue.
the shutdown and start speeds are MUCH faster than hibernate in my case with IBM approved Hitachi 5400rpm 160gb IDE. not sure for ssd though
