Sure enough, windows 10 started downloading in Windows update, but the installation aborted. (maybe from the same reason as mentioned below).
So I decided to take matters in my own hands using the "Media creation tool":

only to find out, that I was not allowed to install keeping my files, programs and apps. The reason was a conflict between languages on the T440 and the version of Win10. That should not be so, as I used the same language settings all through.
Then I decided to change the Win8.1 language to American english and also have that language in the Media Creation Tool. That worked, so now I am typing on Win10, seemingly running crisp and smooth with no issues and all drivers installed. After the installation, it was easy enough to download and install my native language pack again.
Only difficulty seemed to be, that the performance the first hour or so after the upgrade was slow and sluggish - I suppose it had to get the file-system in order.
