T500 Windows 10 Upgrade Failed

#1 Post by doublej » Fri Jul 31, 2015 6:31 pm

I went through the install process the other day to upgrade from Windows 7 (32 bit) to Windows 10 (32 bit) on my T500. Everything seemed to be going well until the machine rebooted.

Then after the Thinkpad splash screen, I received some sort of error message. Unfortunately I did not take a picture of it but I think it was telling me that I was missing something and asking me to insert a disc with the operating system. I (think) I turned off the machine and rebooted it. It loaded up Windows 7 and gave no indication that I had tried to upgrade to Windows 10.

Does anyone know what might have happened and how to fix it? I think I have the latest set of drivers available from Lenovo for Windows 7.

what is the media you used to upgrade your Thinkpad? and from where you got the media? Are you upgrade online?

Please explain it first...
Thinkpad have been created to be tortured. :D

I installed it by going to the Microsoft site and downloading the Media Creation Tool. I then launched it to begin the installation process.

Second time is a charm in this case. I don't know why but when I tried it yesterday it upgraded fine.

Hi everyone. Long-time reader, first post, and this seems as good a place as any to post this question.

I'm looking for any advice or experience with upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 on a T500 and W500. I had problems with upgrading to both, but no time (not 2nd, not 3rd) has been a charm.

The system seems to want to upgrade--I see "Win 10 Pro upgrade" and "failed" in the upgrade history several times. Several times, though, I get error C1900101-2000C for windows updater as soon as either laptop starts up. When I tried using the media installer, I get a kernel error and the system has to go back to Windows 7. (One time my W500 would not start at all--I eventually removed the hard drive, booted into BIOS, reinserted the hard drive, and bingo--the computer went back to Windows 7.)

My centuries-old T61 upgraded like a charm, as did my T420 and X200. (The T61 and T420 upgraded on their own, through the windows update service. I had to use the media installer for the X200, but everything worked fine.)

I know I could wait to see if Microsoft ever figures this out. But I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about what the problem might be. This seems specific to the T500/W500 line. I've tried looking online, even here, but I can't find anything that fits with that I'm experiencing. Is this an issue with hardware, switchable graphics, drivers, etc. just not having a good fit with W10?

Thanks in advance. You all have provided useful advice that's helped me get this far in figuring out how laptops work.

Go into your BIOS.
Under Display set to Discrete Graphics, and turn off OS Detection.
When doing clean install let Windows find the video driver. Also the ATI driver if you switch to that in the BIOS.

The switchable graphics driver will not work anymore in W10. You will have to switch in the BIOS if you want to change the graphics card.

And W10 works fine on my T500 with ATI.

Tried it, but the video was really distorted and didn't even allow maximum resolution (1900 x whatever) when Windows 7 restarted (so didn't even try to upgrade then). Is that normal? Could I keep the high resolution in W10?

Sorry for being dense, I'm still learning along the way. Also, would I have to do the clean install only, or would this work for upgrading? Thanks!

Of course you can use you full screen resolution. With W10 it is important to patiently just wait a few minutes for the driver to be found, dowloaded and installed.
