Tried Windows 10 on my X201 and went back to 8.1
Tried Windows 10 on my X201 and went back to 8.1
Windows 10 seemed to work at first, but eventually I started to get system freezes that seemed to be related to the video drivers. I could not find any solution by Googling and decided to revert to Windows 8.1.
The X201 is not on the list of officially supported hardware for Windows 10 so I guess I should not be surprised!

You should probably wait about a month for Windows 10. By that time all the drivers should be supported on the X201.

Yup. For anybody thinking about experimenting I recommend waiting...

Right now, 10 is indeed embarassingly buggy, probably worse than when XP was new. But I am still upgrading most of my computers to 10 because I am so in love with its user interface, which is IMO the best ever, especially on a touchscreen. Hopefully future updates will sort out the bugs, soon.

Re: Tried Windows 10 on my X201 and went back to 8.1
I upgraded my Thinkpad Tab 2 to 10, and all the drivers that were buggy in 8.1 were reused and buggy - I killed it trying to reload the video driver.
I restored to 8, then upgraded to 10 and it seems pretty good.
I never saw all day battery life before and still don't, but the desktop seems better or on par with Windows 7 and I plan to stay with it.
On my x301, it seems ok after a few updates, but I really don't use it enough to have a strong opinion.

Re: Tried Windows 10 on my X201 and went back to 8.1
I've got a solution for X201 graphics freezes.
1. Reboot into safe mode.
2. Roll back the driver using device manager to windows basic graphics device driver.
3. Reboot into normal mode.
4. Install the windows 7 x64 drivers from Lenovo Support. Later Intel ones will say they're not applicable for some reason.
5. Reboot.
6. Sorted.
Will be solid after that.
It sucks in so many ways though I'm going back to windows 7.

Re: Tried Windows 10 on my X201 and went back to 8.1
Here's the problem: The next time that Windows Update runs automatically, it will put the Windows 10 driver back.pointyhat wrote:4. Install the windows 7 x64 drivers from Lenovo Support. Later Intel ones will say they're not applicable for some reason.
I have upgraded nine of my computers to Windows 10, and so far four of them have given me startup errors that led to reboot loops. On three of these, Windows fixed itself after 3 - 8 loops, but on the HP EliteBook 8740w, I had to use the Windows setup disc to repair the installation.
It seems that every couple days, I discover new issues with Windows 10.

There are no updated drivers past 2012 for those devices so that's a non issue. The version you install by hand ill be pinned.
It is definitely crawling with issues though. Seems very beta-like...

Re: Tried Windows 10 on my X201 and went back to 8.1
It appears that the X201 is now on the Windows 10 compatible list, or at least Windows10 says so. Is anyone still having problems with it on the X201?
Re: Tried Windows 10 on my X201 and went back to 8.1
I think that means can be installed. That is MSFT's opinion not Lenovo's. I don't think Lenovo supports anything beyond W7 (32 and 64 bit) on the x201. They have no obligation nor revenue enhancing reason to do so.RDKirk wrote:It appears that the X201 is now on the Windows 10 compatible list, or at least Windows10 says so. Re: Tried Windows 10 on my X201 and went back to 8.1
I've done the upgrades to my T410 collection lately, which if I'm not mistaken are just larger versions of the x201 with an optical drive and a couple more ports (first generation i5 CPU, Intel HD graphics). I've done one fresh install and three upgrade-from-Windows-7 installs. The fresh install was the one I had the most trouble with - it would lock up randomly. I managed to track it down to the video driver in the end, and suddenly Windows 10 magically installed another video driver without me knowing that seemed to halt the lock up problem, after a couple of days. After that it ran very well and then I put my original hard drive back and did an upgrade from Windows 7 instead.
I have found that if you do an upgrade from Windows 7, keeping the Thinkvantage tools (power manager, access connections) is pretty straightforward if you are that way inclined.
I have an actual x201 I may switch to Windows 10 at some point. I don't imagine I will have any issues if it behaves the same as the T410.

everything is OK, except for closing lid.
closing lid did not triggered any action , neither sleep, shutdown, or hibernate.
any suggestion?
Re: Tried Windows 10 on my X201 and went back to 8.1
I multiboot Windows 7, Windows 10 and Mint Linux 17.2 on my X201 Tablet. It has been the most trouble free Thinkpad with Windows 10. Power Manager 3 works as well as in Windows 7 and I haven't had any driver issues or incompatibilities. I'm talking about the original July 29th release. The fall 1511 update borked both Power Manager and Virtualbox on my W520 and lasted just around a 1/2 hour on it. I've no intention of installing it on my X201 or using it further which means I have no real serious intention of doing anything with Windows 10 other than testing it. Windows 7 looks a lot better and is compatible with everything I want to run so it will always be the main OS on any Thinkpad that came with it.
Currently using: A W500, a W520, an X201T, an X220T, an X61T, a 14" T60P,a 15" UXGA T60P and a W700.
Currently idle: A spare W500, a spare X61T, a spare W700, a 14" T61, a 15" SXGA+ T60, a 14" T60, and my first Thinkpad, a 770X.

Closing the lid on my X1 Carbon(3rd), Win 10 PRO 64, offers 4 settings under Power and Sleep, Advanced Settings, System Settings: DO NOTHING, Sleep, Hibernate, and Shutdown. Your setting may be DO NOTHING.

Windows 10 Enterprise works wonderfully on my Thinkpad X301. I have 8GB of RAM and a 250GB SSD.
Everything from sleep, thinklight, brightness, etc. Works perfect. I wonder why people with newer machines are having issues.
