After M$ decided my T440 needed the "FALL BUILD" I was faced with a non-activated system and struggled. I read that after the 1511 build a valid W7/W8 product code could be used for activation but there was no COA under my battery. This is a T440 with a Lenovo provided W7 PRO build using the SALES TYPE.
There was a CHAT available with M$ W10 help so I decided to try. Using the COMMAND PROMPT (ADMIN PRIV) and entering this script "wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey" should generate the old/original COA and according to my reads that should work for ACTIVATION. Mine did NOT work so back to M$ and another chat, M$ Tech spent several minutes trying to activate "remotely" with no success and finally the Tech just generated a new COA KEY for me and insists that I should be able to use that key forever to do .iso installs on this machine etc. The script generated a W8 COA but Tech insisted it should have worked.
If you've ACTIVATION problems after the update/upgrade you might try the script and see what happens.
