Dual Boot WIN 10 for Dummies

#1 Post by kevinc » Fri Jul 22, 2016 1:52 pm

I'll be doing the WIN 10 upgrade on my X230. I'd like to set up a dual boot system with WIN 7. Will the upgrade procedure give me the option of installing WIN 10 to a 2d drive or to a clean partition without wiping out the underlying WIN 7 install? I've read through a lot of the posts on WIN 10 but still can't be sure of that.
If that won't work, what is the best way to do it?
Thanks

The safest way is to clone your existing Windows 7 partition to a spare drive, do the upgrade on that. Afterwards you can do a clean install. Once you have a working Windows 10 system, it can be cloned to the original drive on a different partition. The BCD can be edited to boot both systems. Editing a BCD is not easy for those who are not familiar with it but there is software that simplifies it like Easy BCD and Bootice

Yes, EasyBCD allowed me to set up my main SSD with Windows 7 Pro, and a second spinner drive in the Ultrabay slot with Linux Mint.

You could do the same on either the same drive or two separate drives. If you put both OS's on the same drive, you could have a third OS on a second drive in the Ultrabay slot. I bought an external DVD/CD burner so I didn't have to remove the Ultrabay drive.
