T550 W10 Enterprise OS "notes"

#1 Post by WVZR1 » Fri Dec 15, 2017 1:35 pm

I've purchased a T550 with this note in the sell description. Would someone please explain what I need to be concerned about, if anything.

Windows 10 (Enterprise Insider Edition version 1703)

Should I just use the lenovo Recovery Media for 8.1 and after the rebuild do the W10 PRO install. My concern is maybe in the future if wanting to resell I'd like to be sure I have no issues doing a return to a more salable OS. Does the note imply that it could only do rebuilds from the same server/company that owns the Enterprise Package. Is the "Insider" note significant? The 8.1 info is in the Bios, the machine didn't have W7 downgrade option which would have been ideal. Can I do an Enterprise rebuild at my leisure anytime I'd like to?

I believe until years end W10 can be done using the Accessibility Site or maybe a couple other options.

I'd be interested in my options. I should have the machine Thursday - Friday next week. Aside from the Accessibility Site are there other available upgrade paths? Recovery Media I should have maybe Tuesday from lenovo.

Maybe I can explain my thoughts. The machine was sold NEW in early 2016 with W8.1 PRO 64, I'm assuming it was in a business environment or personal (wouldn't matter) maybe but to sell it the SSD was scrubbed and they didn't have Recovery Media so to be able to sell with an OS the VL Evaluation trial was used to get an OS on it.

My thoughts are this - if it has never been upgraded using a digital license and I just used a 'clean' install ISO maybe it wouldn't ACTIVATE and then if I attempted the 'Digital Activation' through the 'Accessibility Portal' after doing the W8.1 PRO Recovery it might still see the hardware as being used in an attempt and just REFUSE it all together.

If it had ever had a W10 'Digital Activation' then my understand is that on future installs there's no need to jump through any hoops, the activation servers will see the 8.1 PRO in the machine and just do the W10 PRO clean install.

If I needed to use the 'Accessibility Portal' I need to do it before years end. Any thoughts?

So I just assumed that the machine had a W10 PRO UPGRADE done prior to the "Evaluation" so I did a USB, the install moving the installed to Windows.old. After the install I went back and let WIN 10 do a 'clean up' and I ended up with a 21G install after the 45G was cleaned by the OS. I tried the OS install using a 'direct connection' and it said NO.

Now what do I want Lenovo to do? Lenovo asks/begs you NOT TO USE Edge for system updates etc. I use Vivaldi so I'm good there.

Should I just ask in the T550 sub forum for suggestions on the Lenovo features to add or ...........................

Get another hard drive or another SSD and do a selected OS type as windows 10 Pro install (not upgrade) instead and see if it activates as windows 10 Pro.

Thanks for taking the time to offer some help!

Maybe I didn't explain well enough. The install is fine, W10 PRO -64 ACTIVATED. There's many Lenovo "FEATURES" such as Power Manager etc that could be added using the support links and I was interested if there was maybe some that most users might avoid. I've made no decisions but did find this information from Lenovo for the most recent "Creators Fall Update".

Lenovo Tested Systems with "Falls Creator Update 1709" -

There was actually no benefit to the seller to have done what he/she did for the sale of the machine. I'm fine with a T550 with 400+ days of warranty. I'm not fond of the numeric keyboard and if I had it to do over I might have been a bit more selective in my shopping.
