Windows error code 0xc0000225

#1 Post by cfds » Fri Jan 26, 2018 1:42 am

Hello all,

I did it...have a Lenovo Yoga 910 2 in 1 for work with windows 10 education 64bit.
I merged several partitions and made the mistake I believe to merge the partition containing the boot media.
Now the Yoga fails to start and give me a BSOD with the error code 0xc0000225. I don't have a back-up and don't have an installation DVD containing Win 10.
I hope that I can solve this problem with a bootable USB stick containing win 10 in order to repair my windows...

Anybody more suggestions as I would like to get it up and running asap for work.

Thanks

Since this is Windows 10 we're talking about, probably yes.
But, you might need to download the LAN and wifi drivers separately. There's a chance that a default Win 10 install doesn't have the proper drivers for network connectivity, which means it won't be able to find and install drivers and updates by itself.

Another issue is that you won't get whatever freebies like Office 365 subscription that the OEM install came with.

The alternative is to find someone who has the same laptop model (in this case Yoga 910) with Windows 10 installed, and create the OEM installation disk from there.

I used the same method on a Lenovo N22 with Win 8. One of my clients had two of them, and one was replaced under warranty. The replacement arrived with no OS installed, so I created an installation disk from the other unit.

Thanks for your reply, in this case it needs only to repair the boot manager or create a new partition and place the file back in the that partition.
I have a second laptop with me so I can download all drivers when needed...

Don't forget to make backups of your documents before attempting to repair the Windows installation.

Difficult as I cannot get the machine to boot...but as I just got the laptop its just a matter of copying all from my old machine like I did a couple of days ago.

Tried together with the IT guy from our company to boot with a Windows 10 installation disk, tried to repair etc...no fix.
Then had a look with a partition manager software disk to see what partitions are on the SSD and does it see the SSD but not 1 single partition. Looks like the SSD failed at the same time I merged partitions.
Looks like I am to replace the SSD and start from scratch...
Now my question, I assume the product key is somewhere embedded in the main board and not on the SSD itself. I don't have the product key.
There is no sticker with the license key to be found...

Maybe....but more likely your attempt to merge partitions damaged the partition table. It may be possible to boot a live partition editor and create a new partition table. Might even be able to recover the lost partitions...or not.

I agree. I'd boot with a recent linux live CD/USB and use its partitioning tools.

The W10-key should already be registered with M$.
Install any W10 version, go online to activate it and M$ will recognize which PC/laptop you use.

I don't even know if that ssd is removable in this thing (otherwise I'd suggest usb-sata adapter (or something m2) and other machine). But I strongly suggest that you heed the advice of NOT cleaning/reformatting that disk, but only trying to perhaps restore the partition table with a decent other system. Juste pour info, if you booted something like Ubuntu from usb, used 'gparted', restoring partition table is just 5 clicks, moreover it will almost always work if the disk isn't physically damaged. (And if it was damaged, it would be totally dead, that's the only way ssd-s go...).
So IMHO your all data is intact, just don't do anything stupid.

Well, that's my feeling to...to much of a coincidence that during the first boot after I merged the partitions the SSD would fail.
But this is new territory, restoring partition table. I will have to look at google how to!
Thanks for the feedback and advice!
And for info, the SSD is removable on the 910!

tried with Ubuntu , installed it and during installation I got the msg that there was not enough sopace on my drive?
looks like it installed Ubuntu on my USB 8GB stick and not on my internal drive.
Tried with Gparted, the same it installed it on my USB stick and did not see my SSD?
In Gparted looked for all available drive and only the USB stick showed up.
Could be well that I am doing something wrong here but it confirms again that my SSD is not seen...
This is well above my paygrade...

I have the original drive in it, Samsung PM951 as listed in the parts list for the Yoga...
I reinstalled Win 10 education but I did face some serious challenges...not a straight forward installation like on Win7.

Installed win 10 education from a DVD the IT guy did downloaded it on a disk for me.
Started but no drive to be found so looking on google found out that I had to change SATA in the BIOS to AHCI. That was the trick, installation completed to discover I installed win 10 home edition?! I did read somewhere that if you use the windows creation disk utility that you can only install home and or pro??
Not acceptable so I downloaded win 10 education myself and made a bootable USB stick with Rufus, tried to install but this time the format of my drive was not correct, my drive was GPT, needed MBR. So booted the thing to get into cmd to change the drive from GPT to MBR. Probably I made the mistake using the wrong settings while making the USB stick...
Right, installation completed...again win 10 home edition????!
I thought that the key was embedded on the mainboard? By now I realized that this laptop initially came with win 10 home edition...
So I contacted the previous owner and by luck he still had the key as he upgraded from home to eduction.
Upgraded using the provided key and within 20 min I had win 10 education on my laptop...spend all day yesterday!

Been reading on google and came across some topics where somebody else used a tird party partition software to run into exactly the same scenario like me.

I tried all the tricks I could find on google to repair the partition table etc, no luck. As I just bought this laptop I did not loose any data as I just transferred all from my X1 Carbon, the whole experience has just cost me a lot of my spare time but hey, the drive has been partitioned, LOL
