Stop W10 from automatically updating SPECIFIC drivers.
Did you go daft again by the latest Micro$haft Update that ruined your drivers?
Stop that irritating hassle once and for all!

Re: Stop W10 from automatically updating SPECIFIC drivers.
I'd rather just prevent it from updating ANY drivers, but this method may be useful if you have a particular thing that requires one specific driver version to function / function properly. Good find.

I completely shut OFF WinX Updates through the registry, until *I* decide I want to update. This way, I don't have to worry about ANY updates borking ANYthing on my one, WinX machine.RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 8:01 amDid you go daft again by the latest Micro$haft Update that ruined your drivers?

Your solution doesnt change anything. They day you reactivate windows update all pending updates get auto installed. Windows 10, you take it with all its flaws or you move to Linux. All other workarounds are just postponing evil but you will never escape from the evil!Dragunov wrote: ↑Fri May 24, 2019 9:11 pmI completely shut OFF WinX Updates through the registry, until *I* decide I want to update. Not if you change the policy to "auto download and notify for install". Nothing will get auto-installed this way, however - the ability to selectively control which updates to install is still severely limited (I believe impossible with the default UI, only with additional tools).

exactly, that's my point, there is no longer possibility to select/deselect certain updates so his solution doesnt solve anything. either you do not update and are vulnerable to whatever new security exploits or you auto update whatever new updates is available including malicious microsoft features. for people who want to control their machines, W10 is the best selling argument for Linuxdr_st wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2019 12:49 amNot if you change the policy to "auto download and notify for install". Re: Stop W10 from automatically updating SPECIFIC drivers.
You can install Windows (or anything else) as you prefer in a VM then take a clean snapshot to which you can always revert. The safest way to run Windows is on a Linux host. Virtualbox is easy to get started with and you may never need anything more advanced. Virtual machines can be left disconnected from the network and files exchanged via shared folders if malware is a concern.
Re: Stop W10 from automatically updating SPECIFIC drivers.
VMs are great for many things, but not if you want raw graphical performance or direct access to hardware (device passthrough to VM is supported sometimes but not always).
Running in a VM permanently disconnected from the wide web might be too much of a hindrance for daily work, and if you connect your VM to the internet, you are just as exposed to malware as on a physical OS. Granted, it won't affect stuff outside the VM, but that makes no difference if all you do on the host is run that the VM. It does make the process of restoring from a snapshot easier, though.

within your VM, sure, you are exposed but it is still sandboxed and won't touch your main Linux OSdr_st wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2019 1:23 amVMs are great for many things, but not if you want raw graphical performance or direct access to hardware (device passthrough to VM is supported sometimes but not always).

Re: Stop W10 from automatically updating SPECIFIC drivers.
Looks like you didn't really read all of my previous post.
Your claim is true, of course, but unless you actually use the main Linux OS for something, it has no practical value.
Many people who run Windows only run Windows, and have no use for Linux. Suggesting that running their Windows (which has all their work and personal data) as a VM inside a Linux host somehow makes them safer is bogus.

Re: Stop W10 from automatically updating SPECIFIC drivers.
What driver are you having an issue with? Intel Wireless a couple of year ago caused ProSet to "stop working" on every startup. I opened a case with Intel, got a beta driver which solved the problem and then the Intel Wireless drivers following have always been good.
The problem with Lenovo drivers has been that they are late with corrective drivers and only once (for me) early with a bad driver (and even that did not stop anything from working.
Keeping a Windows 10 machine up to date is normally much better than not updating it.

Re: Stop W10 from automatically updating SPECIFIC drivers.
Some feedback from my side. I do not have own laptops with W10, but I maintain one of my girlfriend which has a dualboot Debian/W10 setup. Her W10 is set to auto update, this week I verified and the latest W10 upgrade to v1903 was pending. So I updated it, it took a lot of time, like 5hours to have the machine fully upgraded. The progress messages shown do not make sense and go up and down without having a clue what is happening under the hood. As soon as it finished, all seemed to work except the RICOH SD driver was no longer recognized on her X220. I just had to simply uninstall the existing driver and reinstall the same driver again to have the RICOH SD reader being recognized in device manager. Overall not many frustrations but it does not make sense why there are always driver issues after an update of W10 and reinstalling same driver is solving it each time. My advice/ do not block the daily W10 updates, but only upgrade to new W10 version when you really have lots of time available

Re: Stop W10 from automatically updating SPECIFIC drivers.
I use the "roll back driver" button in device manager, going forwards windows will no longer update the specific driver!
Daily driver since 2011: T410, i7-640M (formerly i5-520M), 8GB RAM, EVO 860, 1440x900, Windows 10.

Home users can also do this:
Replace the Hardware ID inside, make sure to double backslashes on your's like I did on mine. You can add more IDs by just adding more lines, and counting up, so:
etc.
To remove all restrictions, you can run this reg:
Code: Select all
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceInstall\Restrictions]
"DenyDeviceIDs"=dword:00000001
"DenyDeviceIDsRetroactive"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceInstall\Restrictions\DenyDeviceIDs]
"1"="PCI\\VEN_8086&DEV_0046&SUBSYS_215A17AA&REV_02"

Re: Stop W10 from automatically updating SPECIFIC drivers.
And Loonovo - keyboard function lost completely after updating T480 with System and Firmware updates.
I had a mouse tucked away, it works to move pointer and access things that can just be clicked on - which in Windrows 11 are fewer than in 10.
Today will see if I have an old external keyboard tucked away (I had an external one with red stick), otherwise buy something tomorrow.

Re: Stop W10 from automatically updating SPECIFIC drivers.
This is true, but can backfire. It will block automatic or manual driver installations, but will not block Windows from replacing the driver with an inbox driver, as part of a milestone update. And then you won't be able to manually reinstall the previous driver, until you remember to go and (at least temporary) remove the restriction. Happened to me once.
