X1C4 resume problems w/ new Windows 10 install

I am in the process of putting Windows 10 onto my X1Carbon Gen 4 (shipped with Windows 7) but I cannot get it to resume from long sleep or hibernating. Anyone else have this problem?

Hello to our forums again!

So are you saying that your X1C4 upgraded to Win10 cannot "resume" after "sleeping" your system?
Or are you saying that you cannot "sleep" your system?

1. Yes! We recently installed Win10 Pro (64-bit) to our X1C4, and had no problems at all.
Specifically, no resume problems.

2. By the way, fyi, under the SSD era, it is not a good idea to "hibernate" your system, as this would force a massive multi-GB size write to your SSD every time you "hibernate".

I finally got this working. Apparently the BIOS legacy boot needs to be disabled and only allow for UEFI. Now the system resumes properly after hibernation. (By the way, I meant that the system would start but not restore the machine state.)

Regarding the SSD and hibernating, I do not understand how this is any different from the thousands to tens-of-thousands of file writes that occur every day on the laptop. Most modern SSDs have wear averaging and I have yet to encounter problems after years of continuous service with some my more active workstations that monitor equipment 24x7x365 (logging data to it's sql server, interpreting, aggregating, discarding). In fact we moved to SSDs to avoid some of the more frequent failures of the spinning disks. That being said all of the big servers have spinning disks (albeit raided with hot spares), Where you really run into problems with SSDs is when you start running out of space and the same free space gets used over and over.

Also, the workstation was not "upgraded" but a new M.2 drive was installed and a fresh Windows 10 was installed. Now, I am trying to get the Touchpoint speed back to normal.... What is up with that? Touchpoint works fine with Ubuntu, but the Lenovo/Synaptics drivers almost seem intentionally sabotaged.

Hey TP_guy, hope that you have ironed out the teething problems with your X1C4 / Win10 !

Just a thought... since I also own X1C4 which was introduced with Win10, but with Downgrade Rights to Win7 also:

~~You can buy from ThinkPad the X1C4 Win10 Product Recovery USB Thumbdrive, which costs about US$12 plus shipping (prices for our region converted to USD).
That way, you would have the X1C4 ThinkPad specific drivers as well as bypass the teething problems with Win10 which you've had!

w0qj, does your X1C4 Trackpoint work "normally" with the preinstalled Win10? I currently bounce back between a T450s, a X230, and the X1C4 and the Trackpoint on the T450s (Linux) and X230 (Windows 10) are so much more responsive than the X1C4 ever was, even with the Windows 7 image from Lenovo. Originally, I thought I had a bad Trackpoint but I had the opportunity to play with two other peoples X1C4 and they were worse than mine was. (I had installed a driver from another Thinkpad to improve its tracking rate, but the exact details are lost in the past.)

Our X1C4 TrackPoint acts completely normally, both in Win7 and Win10 environments. No "TrackPoint" bouncing around.

1. Do you use your TrackPad?
If no, then try disabling it from your BIOS in X1C4.

2. Try removing your red TrackPoint knob, and see if your cursor still bounce around.
If yes, then there's something wrong with your TrackPoint "joystick", which may warrant a depot repair (they'll probably ask you to change to a new keyboard).

3. Did you know that ThinkPad had changed its red TrackPoint size, and that it's a smaller square hole in your red TrackPoint knob?
ie: Your X1C4 red TrackPoint knob would not fit onto your older X230 for example.

4. Are you still using the same red TrackPoint knob when you bought your X1C4?

Here's our X1C4 story:
Our X1C4 purchase came with a new red TrackPoint knob but the plastic was too soft.
After heavy use as our daily driver for almost 2 years, this same red TrackPoint knob was literally pressed into a red pancake on my keyboard!

Anyways, ThinkPad must have realized their supplier's error, and have since then reverted to the normal (harder) red plastic same quality same as previous ones.
Our recent purchase of ten (10) pcs of the new ThinkPad Super Low-profile TrackPoint Cap Set (Part No. 4XH0L55146) alleviated this problem.
As a bonus, Our newly purchased red TrackPoint knob makes my X1C4 cursor feel much snappier, probably because the red plastic is not as soft as before!

Something I've been curious about - why do you sometimes write "I" and sometimes "we"? Is more than one person using this account, or is there a different explanation? Maybe you've mentioned it before, and I just missed it? Not a problem, just curiosity. :)

Sorry for my grammar, will try to use "we" consistently to avoid any confusion!

At the risk of betraying my age, there was a time when writing "we" is polite and writing "I" is impolite.
But nowadays it seems "ok" to write "I" without the connotations of being selfish/rude.

W0qj, thanks for the suggestions---especially the link to the Trackpoint caps. I am down to my last two caps. (I replace them whenever they look too nasty. Usually about every 6 months.) Also, they are indeed different from the older Thinkpads.

I am thinking of swapping the Trackpoint to see if it is defective. While it does work better in XP and with Linux, it has never performed like my older Thinkpads. The next time I have an opportunity to stop by Microcenter I will see if they have any Thinkpads on display and check their Trackpoints.

I do not use the Trackpad, but it is disabled in the driver, not the BIOS. Interestingly, Ubuntu (and possibly Fedora---it's been a while since I checked) will still find it and enable it even if it is disabled in the BIOS, so I think it's only a setting the driver is looking for.

I had the opportunity to play with some Thinkpads today (including a fairly fresh X1Yoga) and all of the Trackpoints were much more responsive with the default driver settings. So, as soon as I get a chance I am going to replace my keyboard.

Any idea where the best place would be to get a new X1C4 keyboard?

Probably get it directly from ThinkPad/Lenovo; they should still have parts for X1C4, which came out in Jan 2016.
Our own X1C4 is still under our 5-year ThinkPad extended warranty ;)

Since my wife's x230 just died and she likes the size of the X1C4 I made a concerted effort to replace the keyboard. The whole lower part of the laptop needed to be disassembled to replace it (the assembly I was sent had the whole "top" of laptop---keyboard, trackpad, power button, stickers, etc.) So, I swapped out the fingerprint reader (was just a hole on the new part). Took almost 45 minutes of concerted effort.

Now, the Trackpoint works as expected.
Probably get it directly from ThinkPad/Lenovo; they should still have parts for X1C4, which came out in Jan 2016.
