Win 7 + 10 dual boot on t420/t430

#1 Post by t420poklop » Wed Oct 23, 2019 3:29 pm

Hi,
I have t420 with windows 7 and I bought second mSATA SSD to clean install windows 10 on it and activate it with the OEM Win 7 pro key, but I want to keep the old win 7 on old HDD and use It alongside with Win 10. My question is, will I loose Windows license if I use both win 7 and 10 simultaneously on one PC?

I searched the answer everywhere and some people say that I will lose Windows license and some say I do not. What is your opinion?

I don't think you will. You have a valid license for Win 7 and have, or will, upgrade to Windows 10 on the same machine.

I recently rolled back to Win 7 Pro after buying a Win 10 upgrade. After almost two years I decided I didn't like it and went back to Win 7 Pro.

After buying a Dell G3 with Win 10 Home, I upgraded using the key from my T520 and was activated immediately to Win 10 Pro on the Dell G3.

And can I activate Win 10 during clean instal, or should I first upgrade Win 7 to Win 10 and after that do clean Windows 10 install?

I would probably do the latter.

Is there a possibility that Windows can ban my Win 7 OEM activation key If I clone my current Win 7 on another SSD and from that ssd I will do Upgrade to windows 10, but sometime I will be using the old windows 7 copy on original hard drive?

How would you do a clean win 10 install after upgrading the current win 7 build to win 10? Would you run the setup in a set of win 10 ISOs? That would in all likelihood nullify the win 7 to win 10 upgrade.

Is there even a active microsoft link to upgrade win 7 to win 10 in place, without using a set if w10 install discs?

On this I'm giving this a lot of thought myself. Yes it is a possibility, BUT, if you don't try to keep both HDDs / SSDs in the system at the same time, probably not.

To do this you will have to back up your current win 7 and restore it to the 2nd HDD / SSD. I would then use That 2nd drive to "upgrade" to win 10 with the original drive not in the system. his way your original drive is never messed with.

I'm not a W10 user, but AFAIK the W10 activation is registered somewhere on the Micro$haft servers.
The activation contains some minimal hardware-specifics of that registered PC/laptop.
After registration you can go back to any other OS on that machine and let's say a year later go back to (re)install W10, and off you go without any further ado...
