Touchpad drivers reset after waking from sleep

#1 Post by moofish2842 » Mon Sep 14, 2020 4:38 pm

I seem to be having an issue. On my W541 and my X1 Yoga 1st gen, the touchpad/trackpoint synaptics driver allows me to adjust settings, and they make changes. Then after closing and opening the lid, they always reset. This happens after restarting too. They have never worked correctly in the first place for me. I have tried reinstalling drivers directly from the lenovo website after deleting them multiple times, and no dice. What gives? Given this is a problem I have had on multiple laptops now, I would imagine the issue should be all over the internet? Or is there some blindingly simple fix for it?
W541 - i7-4940mx, 8gb RAM, Quadro k2100m
T530 - i7-3632qm, 8gb RAM, NVS 5400M; motherboard upgrade from t520.
T430 - i5-3320m, 4gb
T430s - i7-3520m, 8gb
Helix 1st Gen - i5-3337u 4gb
Other experience with X230t and t540p

That could be it, but I doubt it as the drivers reset every time the machine sleeps without fail, internet or no, and it never happens while the laptop is running. Also the drivers weren't installed before on the X1 yoga, then I installed them and they now work but reset. I am again very confused that this problem could be exclusive to me unless there is somehow something related to my microsoft account, or programs I use like Opera browser or Steam. Thanks for the help though!

Yeah, dump W10 and move over to Linux (or back to W7/W8.1).

I can't believe it, but I found out what the issue is! I figured it would be something stupid I missed. In the driver configuration, there is the section allowing you to enable/disable trackpad and trackpoint and change right click behavior, then all other settings are on a separate window from the button "Settings". When you change settings in this menu without changing the settings on the main page, the "Apply" button doesn't light up, which I took to mean that it isn't needed, since you can then close the window and settings won't revert. However, they aren't saved after sleeping or restarting, because apparently they were never applied. What I have found is that it will save settings if I do click apply after closing the secondary settings menu. If you click one of the checkboxes on the main page and click it back again, you can hit "apply" without changing settings you don't want to. This now makes complete sense to me, I figured it would be a real issue in the driver but one that others had somehow gotten through without much note.

This also means that the issue is entirely independent of windows versions, again as I suspected. Anyway, why would I move to linux to fix driver configuration issues when linux's solution is to have no driver configuration at all?
I do enjoy using linux on the W541, but every time I use it something goes wrong, I waste a night searching through stack overflow, and the problem never gets fixed. :??:
