Windows 11?

#1 Post by MikalE » Thu Nov 05, 2020 2:24 pm

Windows 10 has been around five years now. Time flies doesn't it?

Where does Microsoft go from here? All they are doing at present is issuing updates to the same basic O/S just as they have done for every version of Windows in the past.

So where do they go from here? An entirely different version of Windows? Or do they keep updating 10 forever and resting on their laurels?

Do you think the next version will eliminate the telemetry? Some of it like recording your voice, keystrokes, and handwriting. Reading your email?

What say you?

Microsoft made it clear rather explicitly, that they will not be releasing an entirely new version. They will continue with the milestone updates (currently about twice a year), and each will be supported for about 18 months (except specific long-term service branches).

What, if any, effect will this have on the advancement of processors and memory if MS is stuck on this O/S with only updates?

What about software development regarding complexity and features of software?

Funny that my X230/E530 from 7 years ago, my X240/X240s/T440p from 6 years ago, and my X250 from 5 years ago, all still run happily on W7, without ANY updates since 2016.
They do everything I want or need.
And they will continue to do so, till they (or I) die.
Who needs W10, let alone W11?
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

You should understand that is is mostly a marketing tactic. Nothing is "stuck".

Milestone updates are at least as major as Service Packs, and often there is more difference between a milestone upgrade (say moving from 1909 to 2004) than between, say, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The accumulated difference in features between the initial release of Win10 and where it currently stands is likely just as big as between 2-3 generations of past Windows operating systems.

New computers will need Windows 10 (if you want Windows at all). At some point hacking Win7 to work on them will become too much of a chore and too pointless.
