I currently have six Thinkpads: three X1C5 machines, two W500 machines, and a T500. All are on the Windows 10 "Insider" program.
The Insider program offered Windows 11 several days ago. I expected that the X1 boxes would update OK and expected the older laptops to fail the Secure Boot requirement.
As expected there was no problem with the X1s. But I was quite astonished when the T500 and one of the W500s went to Windows 11 without incident. The other W500, arguably the best of the older boxes, failed with the Secure Boot check and continues to try and repetitively fail to install Windows 11. I haven't noticed anything in the BIOS differing among those three machines.
On a whim, I moved the "failing" SSD to the other W500, hoping this might trick Windows before it decided to ask for re-activation. It failed in the same manner.
I moved it to the T500, and the update failed with both the Secure Boot and with the TP 2.0 requirements.
So I moved it back to the W500 and life goes on with Windows 10.
Can anyone hypothesize why the first two machines successfully installed Windows 11 but not the third one? I'm really baffled on this one.

Re: Windows 11 Update Curiosity
I'm not familiar with the different options for the Windows Insider Program. Is it always the "Pro" version, or is it possible that the "failing" unit is using the "Home" channel? There has been talk that there will be different requirements applied to the two.
Thinkpad 25 (20K7), T490 (20N3), Yoga 14 (20FY), T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X220 4291-4BG
X61 7673-V2V, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G, X32 (IPS Screen), A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad

Re: Windows 11 Update Curiosity
Negative, but thanks. I think that there is only one Insider channel in recent months, but all machines were always on the most bleeding-edge option. Never have had a Windows 10 Home machine.
Right now I've stumbled on a potential workaround for the Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 requirements, and am burning the thumb drive as we speak. I'll post if it works, although that still doesn't explain the issue.
