Auto-starting programs with admin/elevated privileges without typing password on standard user??

#1 Post by axur-delmeria » Sun May 07, 2023 7:26 am

Microsoft seems to have changed a lot of things inside Windows 10.

Long ago, I know it was possible to have a program auto-start at log on with admin privileges, without needing to enter the admin password every time. I didn't need to do this for a long time since the programs I use are rather well-behaved, but after upgrading to the T480s, I needed Throttlestop and W10Wheel to autostart with admin rights without fuss, but it seems that it's impossible nowadays.

I've tried:

Task Scheduler (with admin rights) --> Run using (admin user), whether or not (admin user) is logged in
Result: Programs run, but their system tray icons do not appear, preventing me from changing their settings if needed.
Note: it won't work at all if it's set to Run only if (admin user) is logged in.

Create shortcut with C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /user:(Admin user) /savecred "ThrottleStop.exe"
Result: It only works the first time; the one for W10Wheel doesn't even work.

If you have any ideas, I'd like to hear it.

How about always logging in as an Admin?
If you are the only user, there shouldn't be any problem.

On Windows 7 I run an Admin user and set my UAC to least restrictive / disabled and then I don't get prompted when the program runs.

Yes, if your user is admin - it should be easier. I think the question is how to do this without granting the current user admin rights.

Do you recall how it used to work for you on previous versions of Windows?

Did you check if perhaps the icons are in the tray, just auto-hidden (and then you can unhide them).

I generally don't log in as admin for safety reasons. It would be nice if there was something like a SUDOERS file like in Linux that gives permitted users to run certain programs with root privileges without needing a password prompt.

This one (mentioned in the first post) used to work on XP:
Create shortcut with C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /user:(Admin user) /savecred "ThrottleStop.exe"

I checked, the icons aren't there at all. I'm not the only one having this problem, and so far I haven't found a solution.

Perhaps they show (and run) on "admin"s desktop/tray? Which you can't see as "user".
