I bet that Lenovo will hear from Apple about the way that they display the name. As you noted, it can easily be confused with iBook even though it says "yoga" vertically.

If it worked. Visit Lenovo forums and you'll find typical Lenovo quality issues reported by multiple users. BIOS update breaks the virtual keyboard, device does not wake from sleep mode, device drivers update erros, random shutdowns etc. There is no QA process anymore.

All of this makes me wonder what quality the Retro ThinkPad will be, if released :(

I wonder this as well. Well, we'll just keep our eyes on 51nb and maby more specifically the T70 (T60 motherboard upgrade) just to have an alternative... ;)

Well, well implemented, it could be nice.

Three things could improve it:

1) physical keys transparent, with a screen below to change the functions.
2) not taking off any useful keys, ie, give in above the function keys, not instead.
3) a good OS/programs support and customizable in any way you want.

Lenovo had none.
I guess Apple will have the third done ok (I dont believe they will provide customization, but at least it will not be as broken as the lenovo implementation).

Now, imagine if you have all 3? and fully customizable? that would be nice!
Even 2 and 3 would be ok, if it is just an addition to function keys, i could live with non physical keys

Lenovo continue to troll all those interested in productivity machines by releasing endless 3:2 aspect ratio tablets with detachable keyboards, while producing no Yoga or (God forbid) conventional laptops in that form factor.

I've come to terms with the fact that I will never get an IBM ThinkPad again, T601 for the end of times. Lenovo is just your run of the mill OEM like Dell, HP, Acer or ASUS. They're not IBM and a result can't (and don't want to) make an IBM ThinkPad. So forget it.

If a ThinkPad doesn't say 'IBM' don't trust it hold zero expectations.

I am also quite prepared for the "Retro" not to happen.

Honestly I think David Hill had honorable intentions but the logistics to pull it off with a Thinkpad that would measure up to the majority is a huge task.

I can remember when people were talking about the Beatles getting back together again and this has a similar feel.

Time and technology has moved on and markets have moved on.

Many of us have our own versions of Retro Thinkpads and we can find content with these.

What is frustrating though is that Lenovo churns out so many products that it gives one a small hope that they might hit upon a product that actually makes sense.

For my money, that would be a laptop with a screen shape (4:3) that was the industry standard for at least twenty years. If they don't want to do that, because they are clueless and would have to underwrite development of a custom component with uncertain commercial volumes, they could instead just release a laptop with a screen shape that seems to be readily available and the latest fashion, 3:2.

Surely it is only a matter of time before some manufacturer does this, because that seems to be how the industry works - throw a lot of dross at a wall, and see what sticks. For example, Samsung are about to release a new 3:2 Chromebook with 12.3 inch screen, watchband hinge and pen input, see http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/10/15 ... tylus-pen/ (as I see was mentioned by evening_hunger above). The Samsung is not really filling the niche because, like the Chromebook Pixels, it has very limited amounts of flash storage, and probably has boot\firmware\driver issues if you want to use another operating system.

I agree, but at the same time, that is a huge issue because when that perfect machine does happen to come about one day, it will probably suffer from bad quality control, mediocre build quality, and be marred by issues and bugs that could easily have been avoided.

Even though it was a while ago, Lenovo is perfectly capable of creating a great, well built machine. Just look at the X300/X301 (excluding the screen). Now, whether or not Lenovo decides to put the time and energy into making a worthy 'retro' machine, is not clear. If designed to be released on some anniversary date, it would make sense to be better quality than what we're seeing now, especially given the hype.

Let's not forget that the heads rolled within upper management right after that...big time. I'm fairly certain that the spirit of building machines that are supposed to stand head and shoulders above the rest of the pack (IBM way) died right after the X30*/W70* range failed to yield a profit, or worse...

No one with any power at Lenovo is going down that rabbit hole again IMO.
Now, whether or not Lenovo decides to put the time and energy into making a worthy 'retro' machine, is not clear. If designed to be released on some anniversary date, it would make sense to be better quality than what we're seeing now, especially given the hype.
If they have *any* sense left, they'll have it out next year, for the 25th anniversary...although "over-promise and under-deliver" has been Lenovo's MO for quite some time now when it comes to ThinkPads.

I just wish I had billions to buy the Thinkpad division back when it was being sold, or now in order to revive True Thinkpads in lieu of counterfeit junk stealing the IBM legacy.

At the very least I can boycott Lenovo, a dubious company which is holding hostage True Thinkpad believers - not because we ever bought any of their rubbish designs, be simply because it's the entity which has bought all the assets pertaining to IBM Thinkpads.

Yep. That was when this whole Classic Thinkpad project started and Hill / Lenovo posted surveys regarding TP loyalists' wishes.
The surveys were a good start, so his claim that Lenovo's consultations with its user base would continue in the same fashion were credible although unprecedented... back then.

This all turned out to be a lie as history has shown. In fact, even the results of the surveys which Lenovo posted were being contested ; with suspiscions that Lenovo was performing mental gymnastics over the interpretation of the results so as to better fit their own agenda (or lack thereof). Badwill piling up from the start.

Even assuming there was genuine goodwill when the whole project was launched, not giving us the slightest official information and apology about delays or cancellation is completely unacceptable, for it is another form of lying. And I don't care if it's supposedly Lenovo's fault because David Hill was forbidden to say a word, neither him nor Lenovo are part of a completely totalitarian system (P.R.C. ain't D.P.R.K.), so he is at the very least an accomplice in this lie.

Assuming again that something will eventually be released in 2017 or later, this will never erase Lenovo's and David Hill's hypocritical behaviour.

Let's wait until 2017.10 ends I guess only then we'll know 100% it's gone (even if now we know 90%). It's actually quite fitting that 51nb produces T70 now. If Lenovo fails, I get T70. (Who knows, maybe even if they don't.)

It would be so very easy. Really. Even if it's just 16:9 screen, those screens are becoming gorgeous these years and I guess we learned to live with them. Better ratios are great but they shouldn't be hindering this. Just give it a roll cage and the old keyboard and any semi decent hardware. Have a few USB-C/TB, a few normal USB, DP and/or HDMI, matters little. Keep it under 2kg. Done. Nothing that needs two years of design.

The Chinese replacements kill the dock connector which I don't like. Although if they ever get a USB-C/TB connector some 3D printing and any random TB dock might solve that :)
