T25 with Quad-Core CPU and UHD LCD Panel

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Fri Apr 26, 2019 6:22 am

Roaming the web, I found this: A FrankenPad Story: T25 with Quad-Core CPU and UHD LCD Panel

A price-list of the required parts for this mod can be seen here: https://i.imgur.com/eUMjh3O.png

I'm sure some of you will get a kick out of this!

Absolutely insane. I love it.

Cringe moment when i read about the liquid metal. I've been tasked with repairing the results after somone incorrectly put liquid metal in a laptop. There was liquid metal everywhere and it shorted everything. Dayumm. Hate that stuff.

Liquid metal isn't so bad when you tape off your entire motherboard to make sure that DOESN'T happen.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Yeah, i'm sure if you do it right it would do fine. But seems like an silly risk to me after seeing what happens when you screw up.

Think i'm gonna stick with mx4 in my machines though.

Well, this goes to show that the tradition of FrankenPadding lives on... :thumbs-UP: to the person who envisioned and performed the mods, quite impressive.

I'm stealing this quote from another forum but I think it applies here:

That imgur thing was put together by me when looking for hardware hackers to make me one of these FrankenPads. I would pay for the work. No need for liquid metal :)

Does this mod properly expose the new docking connector to work with the T480 mechanical docks? I assume so, but wasn't 100% certain after reading that post.

The docking connector is fully functional. A base cover from T480 is used, so all mount holes should be the same as on T480. Docking connector should work unless there are some hardware incompatibilities.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for clarifying this.

There should not be any HW incompatibilities, since by using a T480 board, your laptop is essentially a T480. :)

I'd not be sure in this. For instance, if I disable NFC in ThinkPad Setup, the touchpad and the trackpoint stop working after suspend. Both GNU/Linux and Windows affected, so it's definitely hardware incompatibility issue, not OS-dependent. I asked some people with T480 to disable NFC and try to reproduce my issue, and it seems that only my "T480" is affected. It seems that something works wrong in my setup: it can NFC, touchpad or even trackpoint. I solved it just keeping NFC enabled, since I don't use it all. And I'm not so interested in further investigating this issue.

So, I can't be sure in anything regarding hardware compatibility :>

I recently performed this mod to my T480(to install a T25 keyboard), thansk for your guide.
all photos here:
https://forum.51nb.com/forum.php?mod=vi ... 030&extra=
I also found T470 frp reader is needed(T25 frp reader is different with T480, but same as T470 so we can use T470 frp reader)
Besides, after mod my T480 doesn't have suspend issue(my T480 doesn't have NFC module, so maybe remove it could resolve this issue?)

Welcome to our ThinkPads forum!

Just curious, how did you get your hands on a T25 keyboard?

Heard that ThinkPad had been very strict with their supplies of spare T25 keyboards,
sometimes even asking if you own a T25 before passing out a spare T25 keyboard?
