What hard drive should I buy for my Thinkpad T42 Type 2373?

#1 Post by dejola » Mon Feb 20, 2012 11:22 am

I want to upgrade from the original 40GB hard drive to a larger drive, but I'm not sure which one to get.
I understand the maximum size is 320GBs, but what type of drive do I need, SATA or PATA?
Also, I have ordered the Rescue & Recovery CD's from Lenovo. How do I proceed after I install the new drive, just put the first CD in the CD drive and turn on the computer?

Thanks so much.

Thanks for that information. I appreciate your help.
I guess after I restore my T42 to its original state I'll have to then go to Microsoft.com and download and install Service Pacvk 3, correct? It's probably not included in the R & R discs, or is it?

Then I guess I'll have to go to the Lenovo support site and download a bunch of updates, huh? I've always found that process confusing, not knowing which ones to download.

Thanks again.

[Control Panel][Performance and Maintenance][System]"Properties"
will tell you whether you are running original WinXP, SP1, SP2, or SP3.

My T30 recovery CD(s) installed WinXP Pro without any service packs. Yes, I downloaded SP3 from Microsoft's support site. Win XP SP3 requires WinXP SP1 or WinXP SP2, so I had to download and install SP2 before SP3.

My T30 recovery CD(s) installed all necessary hardware device drivers. Of course, I had to install drivers for aftermarket devices like Fuji Memory Card Reader, Linksys Wireless NIC PC Card and printers.

If your current install on the 40GB drive is up to date, and there is nothing wrong with it, the easiest and least time consuming method would be to clone the 40GB drive to the new drive using Acronis True Image, Clonezilla or whatever you prefer.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E
