dvd copy

#1 Post by rustico » Wed Apr 20, 2005 9:14 pm

Question. Is it possible to copy a dvd to my hard disk in order to play it back at a later date or do I need some special software installed to accomplish this task? I have plenty of memory and running at 72k. Thanks all.

You have to have software. I recommend a combination of AnyDVD and DVD2One. You have to have a way to "rip" the files by taking off the copy guard (called macrovision...accomplished by AnyDVD) as well as a way to "shrink" the files down so they don't weigh down your hard drive (we're talking about 4.5Gigs a disc if shrunk). This can be accomplished with DVD2One. A commercial DVD can easily approach 9Gigs of disc space if this isn't done.

By the way, AnyDVD also gets rid of the Region code. If you have a DVD burner, from the end result of the above process you can burn the files you get to a blank DVD and have a useable copy of the movie that plays in a set-top DVD player, though all the files have to be and a folder labeled VIDEO_TS

Good luck. Expect to pay for the above software, but we're not talking a huge amount.

If you just want to rip to HDD to watch later, just get DVD Decrypter. http://www.dvddecrypter.com/ It lets you rip the DVD as files, or it lets you make a disk image.

True...the DVDhelp site is good...also DVDecrytor. All or good that are mentioned...it's up to your preference.

If you're going to shrink the DVD's you might as well just burn them to DVDs, since the blank disks are not so cheap....

True, but there is no information to conclude from the posts above that the owner of the DVDrom and Thinkpad in question has a burner installed in his machine. I was offering "shrinking" as a means to limit the space that the DVD occupies on the HDD. This way actually several DVDs can be copied to HDD and viewed later without occupying an inordinate amount of space. Once viewed, I would assume the owner (or renter?) of the disc would erase the files.

Right you are, MiJ, I keep thinking that everyone with a laptop also has tricked out desktop as their "main" machine.

Nolenemo,
I personally have a burner in both my thinkpad and my "tricked out" desktop :). Sometimes I get someone's DVD at work or elsewhere and make a quick copy (with process mentioned above) and view the DVD on a trip. In the past, when my Thinkpad's burner wasn't so fast (used to have a UJ-811B then a 815B, now I have a NEC ND-6500A), I'd occassionally, through the fast network at home, transfer the files over to my desktop and burn them onto DVD. Now, if a movie is worth keeping, I'll just burn to disk with my Thinkpad's burner (I always keep a few "spare" blank +R discs in my laptop case). BTW, I bit-set and burn as DVD-ROM. I like this format the best...both with my desktop and laptop as these discs will play in any machine.

All of your suggestions are greatly appreciated but maybe I didn't make myself clear in the first place as to the actual problem concerning the playing of dvd's. The reason I want to copy movies to my hard drive is because when I play it straight off my dvd drive it makes an unacceptable amount of noise due primarily to the spinning.
Thanks again for the help.

Then many of our suggestions should be helpful to you. Good luck! BTW, you should be able to pick up a different DVD drive to fit that is quieter for a nominal amount of $$ off of ebay or maybe listing in the For Sale/Want section in this forum.
