WindowsXP key

#1 Post by tomc » Fri Apr 22, 2005 4:49 pm

I want to re-install windows for a fresh install. The thing is that I can't use the key that comes with my thinkpad, I'm using a Wndows retail, I need a special one?
I don't have recovery cd's or the i386 to make one myself.

Tnx

Why don't you use the key that came with your xp retail?

Because I'm using the WinXP CD of a friend to do the install, so I want to have the original key that came with my ThinkPad.

Then use the XP that came with your ThinkPad (F11 on startup) ... JDH

either use the one that came with your tp, as the above post said, or just ask your friend for the key. I am in no way advocating this, however.

The tp key will not work on a retail version and the friend's retail version key won't fly twice.

Hey tomc, I assume, you don't have your predesktop area either to restore from, so if you want to stay legal, then your cheapest way out is probably the restore disks from IBM for 45 bucks.
Someone may have disks available to you for less.

You assume right, I do not have the predesktop area to restore from it, so I think that I will have to get the restore cd's.

If I get the i386 folder from another T41, can I use this to make a Win CD and use my key?

There are a few good posts here on using the i386 folder. Search for them. I think using that folder it will work on any machine. You will need your specific drivers etc.

I look for the threads in the forum and after reading a few I noticed that you need a WinXP OEM to use the key, if you use a retail, it wont work, so now I need to find a Win OEM.

Tnx a lot everyone for all your help.
