icon

Could someone please tell me how to get rid of the highlighted color under each of my desktop icons. I prefer the ordinary transparent configuration.
Thanks.

In the windows visual settings, enable drop shadows for desktop icon text.

Thanks AlphaKilo474 for the suggestion but I am unable to locate the "windows visual settings" tab anywhere. I can change icon size, color of highlighted area, location, etc., but not eliminate the colored underscored effect.

Could you explain what exactly you mean by "highlighted color under each of my desktop icons"?

When I select an icon it becomes shaded and the background of the text area changes color.

Thanks for the control panel.... performance settings info. I was able to customize the appearance and performance a bit more to my liking but still unable to rid myself of that annoying blue rectangular ID box underneath the desktop icon.

Try this:

1. Shift NumLk to turn on number lock
2. Right click the icon and select Rename
3. Delete all text
4. Press & Hold Alt
5. Press MJOM (which is 0160 on the numeric keypad)
6. Release Alt
7. Press Enter
It will be renamed (alt0160)

For the second icon:
Repeat steps 4,5,6 twice before pressing enter
It will be renamed (alt0160alt0160)

For the third icon:
Repeat steps 4,5,6 trice before pressing enter
It will be renamed (alt0160alt0160alt0160)

What on earth are you going on about? He simply wants to get rid of the coloured background around the text below the icon - please try reading the question.

Lol, I'm also not quite sure what the above procedure will do, but it sounds fascinating!

Another thing to do is to make sure that you don't have Active Desktop on - (Display Properties - Desktop - Customize Desktop - Web tab) - that will having it on will keep the rectangular highlights despite what any other setting.

OOHH, I see what you're talking about! I think you may have missed the boat on this question though  I believe the OP simply wants to know the setting for changing the icon text labels from a solid background-color selection box to a soft dropshadow, which is more aesthetically pleasing against a non-solid-color background:

Haha no problem. Truth be told, your trick is much more interesting, I'm going to keep it around as I know it'll come in handy.
