WinXP - how to disable horrible "hover to click" feature
WinXP - how to disable horrible "hover to click" feature
Despite numerous efforts to disable the hover-to-click feature in WinXP on my girlfriend's T43, I've been unsuccessful. It just keeps coming back like a monster from the grave. Bleah! What is the solution? Thanks!

Re: WinXP - how to disable horrible "hover to click" feature
Pretty sure you mean the single-click / double-click setting in Folder Options. Default is double-click.
(Same in other Windows versions except how you get to Folder Options is different; in XP it's in the tools menu from any Explorer window.)

Re: WinXP - how to disable horrible "hover to click" feature
jdrou, thanks. I found this answer on microsoft.com. However, it works ONLY if when you right-click the Start button and choose Properties, you choose the "Start menu" option, NOT "Classic start menu."
With the Class Start Menu, there is no option as given in #e below.
Try the below steps and check if it helps.
a) Right click with right mouse button on start button.
b) Select properties.
c) Press "Customize" with left mouse button.
d) Select "Advanced" tab.
e) Enable or disable "Open submenus when i pause on them with my mouse”.

Re: WinXP - how to disable horrible "hover to click" feature
That's just one way to get to the folder options menu. You can do it several other ways as well (I always use classic start menu). e.g. you can also get to it through the control panel.runbei wrote:jdrou, thanks. I found this answer on microsoft.com. Go to the Control Panel and double-click on Folder Options.
On the General tab, near the bottom you will find:
Click items as follows:
O Single-click to open an item (point to select)
.....choice
.....choice
O Double-click to open an item (single-click to select)
You need to select the Double-click option and then click on Apply/OK.
If that doesn't work, click on the Restore Defaults button.

Re: WinXP - how to disable horrible "hover to click" feature
Thanks, RealBlackStuff. Alas, the "solution" I tried above didn't work. The GF's T43 is still auto-clicking links that the mouse hovers over. The behavior is strange. If I deliberately hover over a link, it doesn't immediately select it. But if I move the mouse cursor over the page and inadvertently hover too long over a link, it selects it and takes me to the new page.
I can't understand this behavior, or why the solutions I've tried don't work. I'm wondering if there's some lingering ThinkPad software that's causing it. I had TweakUI installed for a while, but I did de-select the x-mouse behavior (I think that's what the TweakUI option is called, x-mouse). Maybe that didn't "take" and something is lingering in the registry even after uninstalling TweakUI. It's a mystery.

Re: WinXP - how to disable horrible "hover to click" feature
TweakUi settings often have to be done repeatedly, before they 'stick'.
There are 2 versions out, get 2.10 http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakui.htm

Re: WinXP - how to disable horrible "hover to click" feature
Solved it. Turns out it's a feature called "Tap to Click." See the following thread for details on disabling it.
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... &view=next
Once the UltraNav files are installed, reboot and then go to Control Panel > Mouse. In the UltrNav tab, choose Touchpad > Settings > Tapping and uncheck Enable Tapping.
That did it. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Yes, that's another feature I always disable. I can see where it could be useful but it just keeps clicking things by mistake for me.
