Can't install Windows XP 64 bit OS

#1 Post by Eto » Sun May 25, 2014 2:31 pm

I trying to install Windows XP 64 bit OS on to my Lenovo R500 laptop. I have Intel core 2 P8600 processor (64 bit cpu) and 4 gb of ram. I have a 500 gb hadrdrive and am currently running Windows 7 Ultimate.

The installation starts as usual loading all of the drivers and files and when the bottom of the screen message says, "starting windows" I get a blue screen error message that says, "check hard drive, run chkdsk /f , if this is first time reboot, check for virii etc.

The error is 0x0000007B!

What is that and how do I get around it?

thanks

Here is Microsoft's answer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316401

Also if the R500 BIOS has the option, you may need to switch to compatibility mode until installation is complete.
Collection = T430 - T500 - R400 - X300 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - R61 (15" SXGA+) - T60 - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P

thanks Neil, I looked for the "No writing to boot sector" anti virus option that a lot of bios'es have and didn't see the compatibility option but i'll look again.

I looked at the link you posted and they list quite a few possibilities, mit seems as though i will try to reformat/partition the drive and see what happens.

One possibility I didn't think of that is listed there, is if the hard drive is too LARGE? is that possible? XP pro 64 bit won't/doesn't recognize a 500 gb drive?

thanks again

I read a reply elsewhere that XP 64 bit drivers are hard to come by!

Indeed is that the case with this R500?

I don't know, I've never had Windows of any kind on my T500, but you can check for yourself on the Lenovo Support web site. Here is the driver matrix for the R500.

I'm curious...what is your reason for wanting to install XP?

This is one of the endeavors I hoped to achieve on one of my T61 models with Win XP. Like the previous post said, use Vista 64 bit drivers for XP 64bit. I have not found the time to give it a go myself. I have all the 64bit Vista drivers on a flash drive.
