PGP Whole Disk encryption ca. IBM service partition ?

#1 Post by whirlwind » Sat May 28, 2005 2:19 pm

Is it possible to use PGP 9.0 Whole Disk encryption on TP without getting rid of the service partition /IBM preload partition hidden on the HDD/ ?

PGP User´s guide declares this: "The PGP Whole Disk Encryption feature is not compatible with dual-boot systems, partitioned drives, or drives that are encrypted by other software products.
To whole disk encrypt these systems, you would need to restore dual-boot systems to single boot, unpartition any partitioned drives, decrypt any encrypted drives, and then uninstall the applicable software."

I am not sure, if it should affect also IBM preload hidden partition, but I presume that yes. Ergo, I will have to delete service partition. Am I right or not?

thank you

whoa

when they say whole disk encrpytion - they dont mean transparent on the fly, sector level encrpytion - that is, you can't run your operating system on it - you do realize that right? PGP cant do what progams like DCPP at securstar.com do.

if you want full disk encryption, think about Utimaco Safeguard Easy 4.1. Utimaco has a partnership with IBM and Safeguard Easy is adjusted to work together with R&R and IBM CSS. The Rescue environment is fully encrypted as well, but Safeguard Easy let you decide which partitions are encrypted or not.

I'd like to revive this thread. The new PGP 9.8 says it has added full support for the first time for Lenovo's Rescue and Recovery partition and permits use of the blue ThinkVantage button even for PGP WDE encrypted drives. I would really like to use this feature but don't have time to make newbie mistakes with it -- I'm crashing on a big project. Has anyone actually tried to use WDE 9.8 with a Lenovo machine? (Mine is an X61 with XP Pro.) Would love to hear how it worked and exactly how you did it. Thanks.

I recently tried WDE on my T41, and the Access IBM appears to still work.
