New IBM Software Installer Error

#1 Post by ibmuser » Sun May 29, 2005 1:26 pm

Installed the new (May 27th update) Software Installer and get this message:

"ERROR: The data area passed to a system call is too small"

Anyone have a sense for what this might be?

I've had no issues with previous versions of the installer.

It is working for me (T41). I installed it over top of the old one and got an error on shutdown, but then I upgraded the BIOS (new also) and with a fresh, cold boot all is well. Consider uninstalling, restarting and installing again. ... JD Hurst

Strange - don't see the new bios update for my X31.
Guess I'll try uninstall/install. Still have the same issue. Anyone else with X31 and installer issues?

Thanks.

Yeah, I got a problem with that too. Just installed it yesterday, and it keep getting crash when I choose "install and up date...". Maybe I should update the bios

I tired to uninstall/install - no luck. I even tried to save the installer to the Thinkpad Folder under Program Files rather than the new default Lenovo Folder (thinking it needed to overwrite the Pkgmgr of the previous one fo rsome reason). No luck. Same error as before.

I've had this this error, I had to remove the enrty for Software Installer from the programs list in my firewall software and let it re-interrogate software installer. I had no problems after that.

I came across one more thing about software installer. do you use a web accellerator? Try turning it off and then use software installer. Hope this helps, post back your results if you would.

Thanks for your help on this. No, no accelerator. Can't figure out what's up as this seems to only be an issue with the newest update to the installer. Never had issues thus far.

OK, I had this annoying problem with the Software Installer as well with that strange error message. When I went home and connected to my cable modem, the software installer worked flawlessly. I can only conjecture that my work place's firewall/proxy prevented the software from working.

Try another 'hotspot' or another network to see if software installer works.

Good luck!

Hi all,
Well I'm getting this same error: "The data area passed to a system call is too small"
I tried bypassing my router/firewall and got the same error.
Googling didn't help me much, except that in general this error seems to indicate an insufficient buffer when found in Windoze.

Any other ideas?

I guess I'll do a manual update of a few items and see if that helps.

I'm doing this on a clients t23-2647-4mu.

OK, an update from my house...

I went and manualy d'loaded from IBM.
There wasn't much new ...no BIOS, Emb.Controller, etc
So then I unpacked them to my "Drivers" dir. and ran the new SW Installer again.

It found the new versions and offered to install them.
Usually I install updates individually, but this time I went ahead and tried to install them all at once.

The first hang was after installing Trackpoint and Hotkey drivers.
The Batt Max and PM app hung and after 10 min or so I closed SW Installer and then restarted it. This time I chose to only install the Batt Max & PM app, but it still hung.

After closing and restarting SW Installer, it reported that the Batt Max & PM app was now installed.

Then tried to finish installing new app's of which 2 were left: On Screen Display & TP Config. The installer again hung this time on TP Config after installing the other.

Again closed and restarted SW Installer and it now reported everything was installed successfully.

I then chose to search the 'net for updates and it worked!

I chose not to install the additional app's and closed SW Installer only to get a "...must restart...." message from it.
So I chose OK and nothing happened.
Tried to Shut Down Windoze and it won't; it's not hung or froze, just won't Restart. I checked TaskManager and tried to ShutDown from there with no luck either.

more later....

...more?....

In TaskMngr I saw RunOnce.exe was running...

" ...runonce.exe is the Microsoft Run Once wrapper. It is used by the installation programs for third party applications. It allows the installation program to startup again after boot up to give the user the possibility to make further configurations. This process should not be removed to ensure that programs are installed correctly on your system. "

...Closed that and the machine restarted successfully.

Conclusions...Uninstall!

After spending way too much time getting the new SW Installer to work at all, I don't think it's stable and am not going to risk using it.

My experience may just be T23 issues or could be Windoze related, but I don't think so.

Thanks. Tried that - still no luck. I've given up on the Software Installer - at least for now.
