Processes

#1 Post by krcmd » Thu Jun 02, 2005 11:19 am

Task manager shows me 73 processes, when I'm not doing anything, and CPU 0-5%.

should I care how many processes are active or loaded? I've got 1G RAM.

Thanks

Holy crap that's a lot of processess  If you're not doing anything.. that's a lot of weight the computer's carrying..

How is the stability of your system? Everything opening, closing, and/or performing without a hitch?

Apparently a lot of programs set themselves up to be launched when I log on. When I look at the tray icons most seem reasonable.

No, it isn't working without a hitch. Long to boot, long to close, other quirky behavior.

How can I convert an automatic load to an optional and easy deliberate load?

Thanks

Most programs have an option in their tool menu or preferences menu enabling you to adjust their startup features. They are, most of the time, also set by default to run at startup times.

Name off a few programs.. maybe one of us is familiar with them.

You can use msconfig (Start->Run->msconfig, then OK) and can configure what processes will start up. While you are fiddling, have an open browser so you can google things you aren't sure about.

With 1GB of RAM, though, 72 processes doesn't sound too bad, especially if you're on 0-5% like you mention. I've got 51 and have 512MB RAM, and m machines works fine (knock on wood).

Long to boot and long shutdown isn't necessarily quirky, but is more a inevitable reflection of the number of things that are being started up at boot time and have to be stopped and put away neatly at shutdown.

You can decrease the number of processes XP starts by default:

Use at your own risk.

I also have used RegCleaner to stop some programs from automatically running on startup.

I can't stand all those processes, so I fresh installed XP, removed the partition, and enabled only those processes required to operate

I think i'm at 27, and I plan to keep it that way...

That's usually the last resort.. as you found out. 27's a nice number, very low. Sometimes reinstalling is for the best. There was a question on another forum asking how often users conduct a fresh install of Windows.. I think the average was 6 times a year. I can't really put a number on it as Ive already done a fresh install 5 times since February  , which is when I bought the lappy I presently have. Sometimes the registry is beyond repair and that's when it's time to save all important materials, round up install disks and start over. Tinkering with registry tools may be helpful to an extent but in some instances it's more efficient to go fresh as the tools may or may not work and/or do worse damage or no change at all.

Cheers

One other option is to make a partition image (ghost, acronis etc) after drivers and essential software are installed properly on a fresh windows install.

Windows and installed software on my thinkpad resides in one partition. All other data reside in another partition. It has worked well here for years.

on my desktop I think I have a total of like 22 max...

on my laptop there is 58!
there are 25 system processes 2 network service 4 local service and the rest are all process of different things running....so, I guess you can take away 2 of those things (firefox and the taskmanager)

I have to say having only 22 on my desktop does make a world of difference given my desktop is a way more powerfull machine it's only expected.

I think on my desktop before I formated the harddrive I was running at almost 100 processes with no problems at all though. so, I wouldn't say having a lot of process is a bad thing. just make sure your system can handle it and you'll be all good...
