Windows 2000 on an SSD?

#1 Post by ajkula66 » Tue Sep 13, 2016 7:57 am

Sheer curiosity on my end: has anyone around here installed W2K on an SSD, and what their experiences were....

The experience will be the same as using XP or vista. There is no TRIM support, so you do risk your ssd slowing down over time.

I do have Windows 2000 on a SanDisk 120GB SSD in my Z60m, but it's running fine for now (even without TRIM)... I don't know if any of my unofficial updates (from BlackWingCat or others) would add TRIM support or not, but it is running well enough

Also have a T42 with an OWC Mercury Legacy 120GB SSD, running a triple-boot system of 98SE, 2000 and 7 (want to see how a triple-boot system handles TRIM, when two OSes don't support it but one does)

I even have my T23 on an SSD with Windows 98SE (1GB RAM and "ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1" set in system.ini to minimize writes to the SSD), but for the most part it will be more reading and less writing on that machine as it runs most of my Windows 95/98/ME game collection :) (would have done DOS on it as well but I found out the Crystal sound chip in it does not support SB16 emulation :()

Later on I might convert some other machines to a CF-to-IDE or mSATA-to-IDE SSD (maybe my 600X, 380Z or 755CX... although in those cases a CF-to-IDE is a better option)

I should've pointed out that I'm intent on running a combination where neither the machine (T43pSF) nor the SSD (Intel X-25E) support TRIM.

This is *exactly* the kind of info that I was looking for - thank you. Does it behave differently on T42 vs. Z60m?

How did you go about formatting the drive for the Z60m?

Found a YT video of a guy who put W2K on an SSD in Z61t...including slipstreaming AHCI driver. Looked pretty nice.

Once I figure out an easy way to *properly* format/align the SSD prior to installing the OS, I'm likely to take that route myself.

I suppose creating the partitions while connecting the SSD to a computer running windows 7 should do that trick

I use Windows 2000 on my 600X, which has an original Samsung IDE SSD. (the predecessor of the 470 which had no simple name) It runs pretty well.

I just used the integrated formatting tool of the Windows 2000 installer. Not sure what it does.

The alignment will be off when that approach is used, at least to my understanding.

I remembered the newest browser you can use is the Firefox 12. I used it a few years ago and it worked just fine with every single website that doesn't get picky with browsers, do you actually know how that stacks up today?

Nothing has changed, FF12 is the last one that works with no tweaks. YT doesn't like it, most of the other websites - at least the ones that I visit - are fine with it.

if the SSD is connected in an ultrabay, to a laptop that is already running windows 7, and attempted to create the partition table using this method should create the partition table aligned properly.

just connect the ssd in an ultrabay in any running windows 7 laptop, and in "computer management", create the partitions you want and format them (i suppose NTFS) , and that is all.

Windows 7 creates properly aligned partitions by default.

To verify, you can use tools like 'AS-SSD' to confirm that alignment is correct.

While I don't know the answer to this question for a fact, I don't think it will make a difference as long as the partition is properly aligned AND I actually get to install the W2K on it without modifying it....

If you use Windows 10 to do that 2000 may not install properly. I remembered last time I tried to make a XP USB boot disk or something in Windows 10 and Windows XP ended up with bluescreen

Actually I remembered. Its not bluescreen. I used Windows 10 to format a NTFS partition and then Windows XP had some kind of problems recognising it.

Well, it seems that you were correct...thank you for pointing this one out.

W2K just outright refused to boot from a "new" NTFS partition that I've created "by the book" using Parted Magic, although the installer seemed to have performed all the necessary functions...rebooted to a blinking cursor.

I've left the 1MB offset in place - required for the proper SSD alignment - and allowed W2K to re-partition the NTFS partition to its own version of NTFS. Voila. The machine happily rebooted into the setup screen.

So now I have a T43pSF running W2K SP5 on an Intel X-25E SLC SSD. What a thing of beauty! I'll be making a summary of my impressions once I've had a couple of days to properly play with the system.
