"xload.exe" - legit or malicious program?

#1 Post by tbu3 » Thu Jun 30, 2005 9:34 am

I just checked my startup list and found an item "xload.exe". Anyone have any idea if it is a legitimate and safe program or a malicious one? For security reasons I chose to deactivate it but it went back again.

I have a fairly full-boat machine and xload does not appear. I did a Google, and it seems ok, but it appears to be something you installed. ... JD Hurst

I searched it in google and it seems to be something related to networking or XP's bootscreen.

I do remember my TP flashing a blue screen error during startup but then resumes normally after the automatic reboot. I diagnosed the problem to a program named BootSkin which I did install. The program skins the windows loading screen.

Thanks for both your inputs. I'm a bit paranoid since I just reformatted by TP which took me roughly 12 hours to set it up to how I want it to be.

Xload.exe seems to be a malicious program. I removed it in the startup list but then came back after two days. I experience pop ups from porn sites when it runs in the background eventhough I am using Mozilla Firefox. The popups appear thru IE. I deleted the file in my system32 folder and removed it in the startup list and my web browsing is back to normal again.
