600E dark screen after OS upgrade

#1 Post by TJC » Mon Jul 04, 2005 7:41 pm

Today I installed XP pro on my Thinkpad 600e. Everything went good but the screen went dark halfway through the install. Now when the PC reboots the screen works fine until the XP splash screen then its very dim. Does anyone know of an issues like this? Is there a way to make the screen bright using the function keys?

Thanks

Is it possible that you need to change the power management settings to a brighter screen?

Also I've read you need to install some extra files. See the following link:

Also make sure your BIOS firmware is updated to the latest version.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to my old 600E at the moment (it's my daughter's now). Currently I am using a T-42 with Win XP Pro, and with this, if you click on the 'electrical plug' icon on the taskbar and choose 'View Scheme Settings', you can see that the LCD brightness can be changed by creating a new scheme (this is part of IBM's Battery Maximizer software). Also with the T-42, there are Fn key combinations (Fn + Home and Fn + End) for changing LCD brightness. I don't recall what the 600E has in this regard - if anything. At any rate, the Fn key combinations are OS dependent, and will not work with all OS's.

I would suggest, installing the Battery Maximizer Power Management software. Go to the following site and enter the information for your laptop. Enter: Brand (ThinkPad), Family (600E), and Operating System (Win XP). Make sure you have the latest video drivers installed, and install the power management software. Read the text files for each of the updates before installing, as some updates require others to be installed first.

Finally, if you look at the IBM Hardware Maintenance Manual for the 600E, it lists possible causes for a dark LCD. You can download this by looking for Publications for the 600E at the same site listed above (start at the Downloads and Drivers page and click on Publications).

My memory's fading, what can I say? I just read on another post about a 600X and using the slider switch to dim the display. I forgot all about using the slider on my previous 600E!

Is your slider at the bottom of the LCD all the way to the right? If you slide it back and forth, does the screen brighten and dim?

Yes that was the first thing i looked at... This thing is starting to tick me off!! I am using my desktop monitor now and everything works fine, so I think it has to be the video drivers I updated the other day.
