Possible to get a windows refund?

#1 Post by ZildjianKX » Wed Jul 06, 2005 12:53 pm

I don't know if this has been covered or not (I tried searching), but I ordered a thinkpad and was forced to get windows, so I chose XP Home since it was the cheapest. I don't plan on using Windows at all on it, just Fedora, and was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to return the Windows license to IBM for a refund.

Thanks.

Yes, it is. I read a legal paper on it somewhere....If you like going through tons of paper work......go for it. (Or google it) I can't seem to find the link, but if I do I'll let you know.

I read into this a while ago,

Yes. It is possible to get a refund for XP _BUT_ if you said "yes" to the licence agreement, then you have officially purchased XP for good.

(this includes pre-installed versions, from my experience, I have always had to check over the licence before I actually got to use windows.)

You have to have said "NO" as, you reject the licence, which says you may get a refund in that case, and you are then able to seek one.

since its a thinkpad, you get to talk to IBM about it. Usually a better thing, but regardless, you may have to get Microsoft involved in the matter before you'll receive a cheque or whatever being your refund.

Its a liiiiitle bit of a fight, but It was/is possible.

There is a site, but I don't recall it, nor how I found it.

I could be way off-base here, but...

If you don't have the software installed on any machine, and you don't keep any copy of the software (like on a CD), isn't it legal to sell it to someone else? If the software hasn't been "activated" yet, maybe this is the easiest route... ???

I would think that "discussing" a refund with IBM or Microsoft would be quite a struggle...

Don't think that's the way to go....I heard of one guy who ended up in legal hot water over something like that. If you have a buddy, give it to them. Do not sell it. You have a better chance of a refund.

You cannot legally resell OEM copies of Windows according to Microsoft's EULA. I think it might pe possible with retail versions though.....not sure
