I have an X30 that had R&R installed on the hard drive. I want to install a fresh copy of Win XP SP2 on it and the latest R&R (ibmrr1182).
Using the instuctions for reloading XP, I created recovery CD's, then reformatted, loaded windows XP, loaded all the IBM utilities, loaded productivity software, fought with Java, etc and now after 10 hours I have the system ready to put R&R on it. Now I get the dreaded error 1722 and the recommendations below are to wipe the HD, reformat, "Go to jail, go directly to jail, do not pass go and do not collect $200". Basically, I need to start all over. Is this still correct?

You might want to read the caveats on the text files for IBM Rescue and Recovery updates. Note the following:
> Consideration 12
> computers that have a hidden protected area (HPA), also referred
> to as PARTIES, and have the Rescue and Recovery program installed
> will not be able to boot into either the PARTIES or Rescue and
> Recovery workspace after recovering the original factory contents.
> To enable the PARTIES area again, restore a backup using either the
> Rescue and Recovery program in the Windows environment or by booting
> from rescue media and then uninstall the Rescue and Recovery program.
You can view the entire file by going to Access IBM > Get Help & Support > Download & update > Device drivers & software downloads. Enter the information for your laptop to get to the Driver Matrix page where you can find the text files (expand choice under Rescue and Recovery).

you could try the following assuming you have a clean XP installation:
1. Clear out the MBR (look here: http://ldp.rtin.bz/LDP/LG/issue63/okopnik.html or google for a tool)
2. boot with a XP Retail CD into the recovery console and do "Fixmbr" and "Fixboot"
After step 2 you should be able to boot into XP again.
3. Try to install R&R
For the next time after a clean XP installation just install R&R as the first thing to see if you run into trouble with the MBR (that's what I am doing after I learned the lesson). Usually this stupid error happens when more than one partition are created (i.e. with partition tools like Acronis or Partitionmagic)

To close off this subject, I went back and downloaded the Hitachi Drive fitness test mentioned in the first message and started all over erasing the MBR and doing a low level format with this utility, reloaded XP, and then "immediately" installed Rescue and Recovery and IT WORKED.
Lesson learned, put R&R on early to ensure that it will not force you to start over.
