[solved] Yellow exclamation mark WLAN card can't remove driver blue screen comes
[solved] Yellow exclamation mark WLAN card can't remove driver blue screen comes
I have a 2005 model Option Globe Trotter / GT GPRS/EDGE/WLAN 802.11b/g "combo" PCMCIA card. I'm using it to connect to WiFi becaue it has a portable antenna which receives WiFi well in distant corners of the building.
I have installed its driver and app suite on my Thinkpad R51 Windows XP SP3 and all drivers are in place.
When I insert it, 3 devices are loaded. GT EDGE Wireless WAN adapter, GT Smart Card Reader and GT Combo 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Adapter. The first two load fine but I don't use them. The one I'd like to use, GT Combo 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Adapter loads with a yellow exclamation mark on device manager and it doesn't work and the WiFi icon on system tray doesn't come up.
The same card with the same software works perfectly fine on my R31, so it must be the driver situation on R51.
If I try to remove the driver at the device manager, CPU usage becomes 100% by "services.exe" and it doesn't stop. I have to restart the computer to stop it. So I refrain from removing the driver at the device manager. I 've uninstalled the driver and app suite, but when I insert the card, the old and supposedly deleted driver files get loaded and that yellow exclamation mark comes again.
How to get rid of this problem?
Update: Problem's solved. I will post the details soon.

Re: Yellow exclamation mark Option GT WLAN card
By deleting the old source and removing anything about it from the Registry.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Re: Yellow exclamation mark Option GT WLAN card
Thank you for the comment. In order to remove the old source (driver) without inserting the card I've added a new system variable devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices as described at https://www.techrepublic.com/article/re ... -machines/ and removed but after a second or two the dreaded blue screen came and it restarted and the old source was still there. I've removed it again, just to be sure and blue screen came again. So I think I'd better not try removing this away again.RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 9:31 amBy deleting the old source and removing anything about it from the Registry.
As for removing it from the registry, how does one go about it?

Re: Yellow exclamation mark Option GT WLAN card
In Device Manager, find your wifi card, rightclick on it,
Option 1) Select Uninstall, also tick the box "Delete source" (or something like that)
Option 2) Select Properties, select Driver tab, select Uninstall, also tick the box "Delete source"
See also this:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... iver-store
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... r-packages
If 'normal' uninstall/delete (via Device Manager) does not work, you can also use Pnputil: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... st/pnputil
Remove driver from Registry: https://www.itprotoday.com/windows-78/h ... ice-driver
BTW, a simple Google search for "how to delete..." would have shown you the above and a lot more.

Re: Yellow exclamation mark Option GT WLAN card
I've edited the title. On Google searches, the obvious results come, i.e. manually select the device and uninstall/remove. In my particular case that doesn't work because it causes blue screen. I've tried it once more just to be sure and it caused blue screen again.
I've removed the device from the registry, using the info on the link. But because I couldn't uninstall it at the first place, the device is still present at the device manager and when I insert the card it still comes up with that yellow mark and it doesn't work.
Pnputil looks good but it's not available for Windows XP. For Window XP, setupAPI is recommended https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... r-packages it looks a bit complicated but I think I'll have to try it.

Also check regedit.exe, do a search there for anything Option Globetrotter related and remove it.
Apparently the manufacturer has removed all 'old' support stuff for that card.
But try this as a last resort: https://www.option.com/contact/
Manual: https://fccid.io/NCMOGLEW/User-Manual/U ... ual-494756
Software:
https://globetrotter-connect.software.informer.com/3.0/
https://download.cnet.com/GTConnect-3G- ... 85399.html
https://www.scoop.it/topic/zyhydo/p/408 ... 3g-treiber
Found some support stuff from way back:
https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions ... em-104720/
This one mentions a USB-problem, which may well apply to your machine/card also.
Many Thinkpads from that era shifted from USB2.0 to USB1.0 because of a hardware problem.

Final word: maybe your card is defective?

Re: Yellow exclamation mark WLAN card can't remove driver blue screen comes
Thank you for the links. I had the installation & setup files already. And this card and its WiFi connection work flawlessly on my other Thinkpads R31 so possibility of being defect is out of question.
I've done one more and extensive regedit search and found some more Option GlobeTrotter occurances and deleted them. But that didn't stop blue screen happening when I tried to uninstall it. So I 've tried reinstalling the application suite using the setup named GlobeTrotterMobilityManagerSetup.exe (version 01.03.2006)
And good news: The yellow exclamation mark finally disappeared and the drivers and the WiFi icon at system tray are all in place.
But the app suite says "Cannot initialize application" when I start it and there is no tab on the WiFi properties which says 'use Windows to configure my wireless network settings' so I can't use the WiFi.
I've tried reinstalling the app suite but it said something like "another version of this product is already installed so the installation cannot continue" I 've checked the app suites installation folder to see if there any uninstall.exe, there was none. I need that app suite just to connect to my WiFi AP but it doesn't work. Update: I've uninstalled the app using the Geek.exe and reinstalled it. The WiFi problem didn't change.
EDIT: I've downloaded and installed the latest version of app suite, the version 3.1 from the link you've given. It's got installed properly but it updated only the WAN portion of the app and it didn't update the WiFi. I'm searching the issue.
Re: [solved] Yellow exclamation mark WLAN card can't remove driver blue screen comes
After 4 hours of researching and trying the WiFi card and its software (which I call app suite) on another Thinkpad (R31), I 've finally managed to make it work. First, I've enabled the event logging for the applications and there I got an error message with an error code (which I don't remember now) Doing a search on Google, that error turned out to be
and this turned out to be a .NET Framework related error. All .NET FW's from version 1.0 to 4.0 were installed on the R51 so what could be missing? This page suggested installing .NET FW 1.1 SP1, which wasn't installed on the R51. So I've installed .NET FW 1.1 SP1 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... aspx?id=33 and the app suite finally started to work!
Thank you for the help and support.
Code: Select all
System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for "System.Net.IPAddress" threw an exception.
Thank you for the help and support.
