error when installing IBM r&R w/XP and T23

#1 Post by jongordo8 » Thu Jul 14, 2005 8:57 pm

I get a windows error 1722 error (something to the effect of a problem with the windows installer package) while trying to install the newest version of IBM rescue and recover for my thinkpad T23. I have tried to redownload the program to see if that fixed it, but still getting the message.

can someone tell me what the problem is or what i can do to troubleshoot the problem?

Thanks in advance

Download the readme file for Rescue and Recovery from the following link. It lists a number of things regarding the installation of Rescue and Recovery. Hopefully you will find the solution to your problem there.

I looked at the readme file and it didn't provide me with any hints as to why I cant install it. Has anyone else been having this problem, as it may be a problem with the file itself?

There is also some information regarding the 1722 error in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. In XP go to 'Start' then 'Help and Support', and type in '1722 error'. At the bottom you should see 15 Knowledge Base articles, click on that (note you must be online to access this). Maybe you'll find something there.

Just curious. Was the readme file that you read for IBM Rescue and Recovery named setup_ibmrr1178.txt ? If not, check the link in my previous post to get that file. One thing I noticed for instance is that it says to update to the latest BIOS version. Have you done that? Below are listed the system requirements for installing the software.

System requirements
===================
- Update your system to the latest BIOS
- 1.5GB of free space on your hard disk drive (base install uses 930MB,
does not include Rescue and Recovery backups)
- Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or higher
- 8MB or less of VRAM shared memory set in BIOS

It also mentions that it is incompatible with any versions of Norton Antivirus older than the 2004 version. See below.

Consideration 7
The IBM Rescue and Recovery program only supports Norton AntiVirus 2004 (or higher). If you have an IBM computer with Norton AntiVirus 2002 or 2003, then you are eligible for a free upgrade that can be obtained
directly from Symantec by visiting www.symantecstore.com/110005.

There are other caveats listed as well.

I am using the latest version of the bios so that isn't the problem.

Also I use AVG rather than Norton Antivirus...that could be the only thing that I could think of that would be conflicting, as the readme file states that you must have Norton Antivirus. Did I read that right or do you just have to have Norton 2004 if using Norton's.

The Vram thing in bios is confusing as well, what does that mean 8mb or less?

so can someone answer whether you have to have norton 2003 or later installed for it to install and work?

Meaning you can't use any other antivirus program in conjunction with R&R?

Why don't you just uninstall your antivirus software, then try and install R & R. If the install goes fine, then reinstall the antivirus software. If you still have the 1722 error, then at least you know it's not the antivirus software causing it.

I tried that and still didn't work...so I can rule out the antivirus.

The exact error I am getting is this:

Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.
