VMware problems?

#1 Post by slasko » Tue Jul 19, 2005 2:28 pm

Hi all

After ive installed vmware on my thinkpad i have experienced some problems on windows startup. When my thinkpad boots into windows its first of all a bit longer to load all programs, but the main problem is that ibm rescue and recovery starts up and wants me to set a password?

Have anyone else had this problem with there thinkpads?

I didn't have this problem exactly, but I remember while I was installing VMware, Rescue and Recovery popped up in the middle of the installation process and wanted me to set a password. However, the dialog specifically said that if I was seeing it while installing software, I should hit cancel. I hit cancel and never saw it again.

I have no idea what VMware has to do with the rescue and recovery software. I've never seen this dialog when installing anything else.

VMWare sets a special user and installs networking devices which may be why it is popping up the Rescue and Recovery software. I have seen that screen on newer laptops (not using VMWare). I just cancel it. I don't run Rescue and Recovery, so VMWare on my machine (T41) does not pop up that screen.

Once installed VMWare should not cause slowness in starting (it does not for me). It likes to be run as an admin user, but certainly does not have to be. Are you the administrator.

Make sure any VM's are using NAT on a laptop in case you start a machine without a network connection. Also make sure the Floppy drive is disconnected in a VM and only connect it if you have one. Generally look through the VM machine configs to see if anything is trying to start that is not physically there.

Bring up the Task Manager & look at the list of processes running. You should be able to identify names of vmware related processes (vmnat, vmnetdhcp, vmware-authd) to see if they are taking up CPU cycles while your system is idle.

You may find something else using up your CPU cyccles.

VMWare and Thinkpad

I'm running VMWare Workstation 5.0 on an IBM T41. I don't run Rescue and Recovery software and I don't have that problem. VMware should be able to help you. Or you can join the forums at www.vmware.com and ask the same question.

Yep did that with me too during the installation, and now everytime i start my computer if it have been shut down (not however on reboot)

Yes my user have administrative rights, but i did not install the program as THE administrator, perhaps i should try that?

The vm´s are using bridged network at the time, but il wil try the nat.
Bring up the Task Manager & look at the list of processes running.
The only processes i can see running is:
vmnetdhcp.exe
vmnat.exe
vmware-authd.exe
But they do not seem to be using any cpu power, though it uses some memory from ram.

You probably won't be able to install the program unless the user account has admin rights. You do not have to use THE administrator account to install VMware.
Once it is installed, you can run VMware without the admin rights. It will use _vmware_user_ account with VMware Authorization service to launch a VM.

There must be some other reason for the slow down on your system. Maybe you have an app (including Explorer) trying to open a file on a network share that no longer exists. I am not aware of any particular issues of system sluggishness, especially when VMs are powered off.

As someone suggested already, you can search VMware's community forum and knowledge base articles.

So, I'm still trying to figure out why the R&R software prompts for a password at all.

I don't want a password on my backups, thanks. They work just fine as-is.

So why is R&R constantly popping up urgent boxes whenever I manipulate Windows user profiles? Can I turn this off?

I just want R&R to run when I decide it's time to do a backup. The rest of the time it can sit down. :)

So it seems there are other people having similar problem:
http://www.vmware.com/community/thread. ... 648#188648
http://www.vmware.com/community/thread. ... 088#221088

I am not running the R&R software (did a clean install of WinXP) on my T40p so I don't have this problem. R&R software must think one of their files have been updated, so it wants to take some action? Maybe it is some file extension conflict. VMware has chosen 4 char extension (vmdk, vmsd, vmsn, vmxf, vmtm) except for vmx to avoid this type of problem. I really don't know what the problem is at this moment.

I have the same problem, with my T42. The VMWARE 5 installed is version 5. It is annoying when you have to cancel the dialog on every reboot.

Hope someone can find solution soon.
