Which Backup Software..??..TruImage Won't Work..??

#1 Post by sickofit » Sat Jul 23, 2005 3:43 pm

K....trying to make a backup of the HDD in my T23,right after a fresh install, and getting it set up the way I want...using a desktop adapter and my DVD burner in my desktop....

Trouble is,I know most people recommend using Acronis TruImage, but it won't work when trying to burn....it says the problem could be poor media quality....but i've tried sony, memorex and verbatim...but all with the same results...???..all DVD+R...The burner is a Pioneer DVR-108 with the newest flash...I even tried to backup the desktop drive for kicks, but got the same error...???

Is Ghost as easy to use....If ever needed, can I do a fresh re-install on a formatted drive with the media after burning, and using the boot cd,or do I have to install anything on the blank formatted drive first..??

TIA

You might be having the same problem I had once. I had a Plextor CD/RW drive on my desktop PC, and had been using Stomp Backup MyPC without any problem. I bought some new CD/R disks at one point, and my burner was returning errors. I thought maybe a firmware update might be needed for these new CD's.

I downloaded (from Plextor's website) and ran the firmware update for my CD/RW drive. Now I kept getting an error message that the media was bad. I went back to the store and bought the same CD/R's that I used to use. I still kept getting the same errors. I found that I could still burn CD's with Roxio, just not with my backup program. Since the original firmware version update file was still available, I returned the firmware to the original version. The problem remained however.

I did some web searches at the time to try and troubleshoot the problem, and I remember reading that CD drive firmware updates can make changes in the registry. Before I figured out what I could do with the registry, I had a hard drive problem that required me to do a fresh install of Windows XP. Now I found that the backup software would work again. So apparantly it was a registry entry changed during the firmware update that was causing the problem.

Acronis will not burn images directly to DVD; you have to first write the image to a hard drive somewhere and then burn the image to DVD in something like Nero (you want to split a large image during the backup operation so that each chunk will fit on a DVD). Acronis will burn images directly to CDR, but of course, these days you're talking about a buttload of CDs to do a full image.

To restore you can start Acronis with the Acronis boot CD and then swap out the CD for the DVD.

The next release is rumored to include DVD capabitilty.

I went with Acronis rather Ghost because Acronis lets me backup and restore to HDs on other PCs on the network and Ghost didn't. Don't know about the latest version of Ghost.
