Help with Microsoft Management Console error

#1 Post by tbu3 » Tue Aug 02, 2005 7:20 pm

I get this error message everytime I run Device Manager under the Hardware tab of System Properties:

Snap-in failed to initialize.
Name:Device Manager
CLSID:{74246BFC-4C96-11D0-ABEF-0020AF6B0B7A}

Any help to resolve this problem is highly appreciated.

See if any of this information is helpful:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... duct=winxp
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/docu ... shoot.mspx

When I try to edit a Group Policy object, I get the "Snap-in failed to initialize" error.

Cause: This may be happen if Group Policy cannot find framedyn.dll.

Solution: If you use installation scripts, make sure that your scripts place the %windir%\system32\wbem directory in the system path. By default, %windir%\system32\wbem is in the system path already; therefore, you are not likely to encounter this issue if you do not use installation scripts.

I tried the suggested solutions but none worked. :(

It's the 4th time I had to reformat my hard drive because of this. The last time I did that I made sure not to tinker with any major settings but the same problem came back out of nowhere.

Its not doing any major inconvenience in my TP's function but it drives me nuts knowing there's something not functioning normally in it.

I would suggest running diagnostics to rule out that you don't have a hardware problem. You can download PC Doctor for DOS and run that. You'll need 5 floppy disks, and after you create the disks, you'll have to boot up from the disks. You must be sure your BIOS is setup so the floppy (A: drive) is the first boot device. Press F1 at the beginning of the boot sequence to enter the BIOS.

All the files and text instuction file that you need are on the following site:

Sure! I just wasn't aware that the R51 had PC Doctor for Windows. I'm not really closely familiar with your series of ThinkPad.

Check out this site called Sysinternals Freeware. There are some neat troubleshooting tools there that you can download.

http://www.sysinternals.com/

I would try running filemon and regmon. They may shed some light on your problem. It could be a faulty registry key, a missing file, or perhaps the permissions are not set properly somewhere. I have not personally tried this software, but I have read of others on this forum that have. If you want, click on the search icon on the top of the screen and type filemon and regmon in the search box. Then you can read of others experiences with this software.

Before you do the above, you could go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Look for error events at the time you had your problem, and click on the web link in the dialog box, while online, to get more information on the error.

I've tried everything but nothing seems to solve the problem. I'm on the brink of giving up and just reformat my poor TP... again. :(
