Partitioning tools

#1 Post by Sleepy » Fri Aug 12, 2005 11:05 am

I have just received my T43 and I love it :) I created the recovery discs etc. but now I want to partition my HD so that I have Windows and Data partitions. Can somebody recommend a partitioning tool that is not as expensive as Partition Magic? Secondly, how should I format the new partition: FAT or NTFS?

I would test your recovery CD's before you do anything else to be certain they work (they don't always). Any partition for Windows should be NTFS. Better, faster, more secure and more reliable. Finally, Partition Magic is not expensive and worth having. Others may have some different, equally workable ideas. ... JD Hurst

partitioning

I supposed that partitioning the HD will not destroy my recovery partition from IBM (I plan to keep it since 65GB of free space is plenty for me). Am I right? Secondly, how do you test the recovery CDs without having to actually restore the system? Sorry for all the questions

Partinioning with Partition Magic (and likely other partition tools) will not affect the Hidden Protected Area. The only way I know how to test the recovery CD's is to run them, which destroys existing data, and which is why I suggested doing this before doing anything else. ... JD Hurst

I think Windows users that are comfortable using Linux it is still a small minority.

I used to think messing with NTFS partition was dangerous until I understood how Ntfsresize works.
