#1 Post by fauza » Sat Aug 13, 2005 7:48 am

Dear all,

i bought my thinkpad R52 series last month. Unfortunately i bought the laptop which was installed with XP Home. I'm an IT graduate student and i have my project which has to been done in an visual studio .net environment and using asp.net.

As to install visual studio .net, i need to full fill the prerequisites IIS. only the XP Pro offers the IIS and web services features..

My question is:

1. how do i install my laptop with XP Pro and do i need to format my 5 gig access IBM which contained licenced XP Home. ??

2. i have to backup my driver folder.

3. else what should i do??

Please explain the steps to upgrade my xp home to xp pro. I

Have you ever installed a fresh copy of a OS? They're just the same. But if you want to delete the recover disk you should disable it in BIOS first.

hai Benjamin,

Thanks for the reply.. FYI I experienced installing fresh OS before that is XP Pro in my desktop computer. Desktop is more confident to install as with laptop i have to think twice.. as my area only got ACER laptop service.. That kinda sad.. But so far i am satisfy with this R52 IBM...

can i overwrite the rescovery disc (which have 5 gig space installed with XP Home) and install it with XP Pro instead.. Is it possible.. What are the steps??

to disable Bios i have to set it to read the CD drive 1st right??

what bout the driver folder under C:\??
will it ne easy to install the driver back in good shape...

such a thrilled to try..:(

I'm not as considerate as you. :)
Actually, I haven't referred to any guide before I started. But one thing is for sure, this is no thrill. Well, this also means I may forget some details while explain the process since it's my first time install XP on Thinkpad too.
Find BIOS->Security->Predestop Area, disable it. Now you can use PartitionMagic to reallocate your disk. With regard to the drivers, IMO you can backup the Ethernet driver (my XP pro can't recognize the Broadcom Ethernet card). Then you can log into the IBM or precisely Thinkpad Center to get the latest tool named Software Installer. It will update the drivers needed automatically.
Feel free to inquire, here's a great place. Someone else can give you more information.
