how to transfer files from administor to limited account??

#1 Post by ewthompson » Sat Aug 13, 2005 8:27 am

All,

Since I received my thinkpad a couple months ago I've been logging in as the default admin. I now want to beef up my security and do most of my day to day stuff under a limited account. What is the easiest way to transfer my basic setup as an Admin to the newly created limited account? (in terms of program and file access)

Appreciated-

Some programs will run fine as a Limited User. Others will not. The only way to change this behavior in the programs that will not run as Limited User, is probably through some registry tweaks, which would vary from program to program.

To change permissions in the registry, you have to use regedt32. Go to: Start > Run > type in regedt32, click on OK.

You do have the option of using Run As Administrator, by right clicking the program icon and choosing Run As. There is a service called Secondary Logon, that must be set to automatic for this to work. Go to: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, for viewing current setting or changing the setting for this service.

You also have the choice of running as Power User. A Power User has more rights than a Limited User, but not the full rights of an Administrator. Go to: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > System Tools > Local Users and Groups > Users, and double-click on the user you want to be able to log on as a Power User. Chose Member Of > Add > type in Power Users > click on Check Names, click on OK, and OK.

If you need to change permissions on certain files or folders, you have to do this in Safe Mode. Read my post HERE on how to do this.

Some programs such as Nero have a patch you can download, or a setting you can choose to allow non-Administrators to run the program.

Well, that's about all I know on the subject. Happy computing.

The easiest way to migrate from using an Administrator account to using a Limited account is to create a new Administrator account, logon to that new account and demote the existing account to Limited and continue using that original account but as a Limited user instead of an Administrator. No need to transfer anything or mess with registry tweaks - the only potential problem would be with apps that won't run under a Limited account but Run As can be used for those.

The easiest way to transfer the files is to move them to "Shared Documents" from the Admin account, the as the limited user move them from Shared Documents to My Documents.

Right-Click My Computer choose Properties
Click Advanced

Click the account you want to copy
