Windows update

#1 Post by Sleepy » Tue Aug 16, 2005 4:27 pm

I just got a new T43 2686DJU. When it booted for the first time it showed IO.SYS missing, but after that everything was fine. I went to the Windows update web page, did a couple of security updates and when I restarted the computer it said it was missing pci.sys file. Nothing really worked so I called the support in Atlanta and the guy wasn't really willing to help so he told me to restore the system to the original state and I am doing that right now. What I wanted to ask is whether the above failures are simply because of Windows software erros or I should check my hardware. Btw, I did the setup of an identical system last week, did the updates and everything was fine, so I am really puzzled if this is about WIndows or faulty hardware.

No brand new (recent) ThinkPad has ever errored out on me on startup with missing files. Two options as I see it:
1. Recover with F11 (make it new out of the box) and see if that corrects it.
2. Ask IBM to provide a replacement as the first one is defective (and so let IBM deal with the problem).

Sounds like your disk has errors on it. I'd ask IBM for a replacement disk.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

I did all possible tests and everything was OK: hard drive, memory, motherboard etc. I browsed a little bit and saw that this pci.sys missing file apparently appears after some Windows updates (also found it in Windows help section). Well, I'll see what to do. I will wait for a while and see if everything works fine. Thanks for the help.

When I booted my "brand spankin new" T43 from IBM for the first time, I had two or three corrupt WXP files. I did an immediate R&R and have been fine ever since, unless you count the time my wife downloaded "just a crossword puzzle program", but that's a story for another time. The worst thing that happened to me was calling IBM and getting the recovery disks for free just in case the HPA was hosed as well.
