Disk DeFragmenter

#1 Post by teamdaddy » Sun Aug 28, 2005 3:37 pm

Moderators: if this is an inappropriate post for the thinkpad forum, please remove. My (very old) desk top unit is running Windows 98SE. I have attempted to run the disk defragmenter several times, but cannot get the program to complete the process. It continuously restarts and will display a note similar to this: "this program has restarted 10 times because some other program is writing to windows". I have turned off the screen saver, but not the anti virus program (AVG 7.0). Any ideas as to how to handle this problem would be appreciated.

I think I recall reading that the built-in defragmenter will complete if AntiVirus is disable during the time defrag runs. My Windows 98 machines are virtual only for test purposes and don't need AntiVirus. Defrag takes a while but does complete. ... JD Hurst

I use Diskeeper, it's way faster than the built in windows defrag. Even on win2k/XP, which uses a licensed version of diskeeper.

Diskeeper did the trick. Thankyou for the recommendation.

Norton actually recommends that you run XP's defrag disk software in safe mode.

You can boot up safe mode by hitting F8 when you see the IBM logo. Then run defrag application as you normally would. I did this and did not have ANY fragmented files. 8)
