So I aborted IBM Rapid Restore install, consequences abound!

#1 Post by Ragueneau » Thu Sep 01, 2005 2:42 pm

My Thinkpad T41's message center had this little message on top for a long time prompting me to try this new whiz-bang restore program that I could download for free, and then it started being offered on the Update Connector. After a while, I figured 'why not?', thinking it would be another System Restore-esque rollback app. It goes through a long install (and then a longer boot), after which I discovered it created a 310mb partition, IBM_SERVICE and mounted it as E:.

When Rapid Restore reloaded itself, it asked how many gigs I wanted to give over as restore space. I'm much more fond of useful diskspace rather than some theoretical datahaven, so I aborted the program rather than give up more. My machine wouldn't start after that, so I repair reinstalled with a pirate disc (for lack of IBM install media) and now I have the pirate key as well which I want to switch out for the legit one on the bottom of my laptop.

Generally, I would just delete the little partition, merge it back in with Partition Magic and go on my merry way, but for a few things: 1) I don't understand IBM's partition structure, 2)my Real Time Protection is now disabled and I don't know how to fix it (no run at startup, running from Access IBM shows the thinkpad with a blue sensor disabled icon, does not twist when you shake the device), and 3)WinDVD won't run nor update (possibly unrelated).

Is there an easy way to give me my 310mb back and fix my programs? Also, since switching keys out doesn't work, am I doomed to do a system refresh from the restore partition?

Note: This was done before Aug. 30th.

1. Since you have installed your own version of Windows, you don't need the IBM partition anymore. Just delete it.

2 and 3. Download Software Installer and it will update all of the drivers and software that you need.

Actually, I would prefer to use the legit IBM license for all of the benefits a legit OS provides. And I run updates every week or two, but still I don't have shock protection working. I haven't found the sensor in Device Manager, is there some other place to enable it?

You can download and install the hard drive shock protection directly from Lenovo website.
