Way to install Windows without IBM provided apps?

#1 Post by krma-thkpds » Sat Sep 03, 2005 1:02 pm

Is there any way to install the operating system (restore it to the factory state) but with no IBM provided apps. I want to download apps from their site manually after the os installation.

I followed the steps provided in the sticky in this forum... on Fresh Installing. Then install Software Installer and it will find everything (drivers). You need to save the IBMTOOLS directory because there is some software (e.g. SONIC RecordNow) that you cannot download.

I don't know... I'm not very sure of that fresh install. There have been some problems with Windows activation and SP2 integration on systems preloaded with SP2. Do you know if the solutions to those problems were updated in the guide?

There are no particular advantages to installing XP without apps and then installing the apps. You are better served by doing a preload recovery, updating it with software installer, updating Windows completely, and then tuning the apps to fit your particular needs. I would uninstall Update Connector (not needed); uninstall NAV 2004 (for NIS 2005 or other product); uninstall IBM Java (for SUN Jav); uninstall or disable IBM Messenger; and install Startup Cop or Startup CPL to control other apps from starting like SONIC update. ... I have not encountered any problems with activation on any IBM system of any model or kind since XP was introduced. In one test with recovery CD's which did result in an activation request, IBM assured me that any activation request on an IBM system was an error. In my case, they replaced the CD's. ... JD Hurst

I was reading the thread about freshly installing Windows XP. There is whole bunch of people who think freshly installed Windows work better and boot faster. I don't know what to think after reading such stuff. So I said to myself, why not give it a try... there are always recovery discs to use if something goes wrong.

My system works essentially perfectly, so "better"? Not much chance. Faster - I don't know, but my system runs about as fast as it can, and nothing impedes it any way. Symantec client security sometimes is visibly checking a file on loading, but that has nothing to do with fresh install or IBM. ... JD Hurst

0.k. Then IMO isn't really worth bothering with the guide and setting up the Windows from 1000 different sites. Thanks for explanation.
