Reducing 'XP services' (Not startup programs) - T43

#1 Post by arjunrc » Sun Sep 04, 2005 1:20 am

Hello,
I recently purchased a t43 laptop.

I read through the archives and found useful threads on eliminating some software/startup entries to optimize the system. I have however not found threads on reducing the no. of services that are started.

First my need:
a) I use ethernet, dialup as well as wi-fi
b) I use the IBM embedded security system as well as fingerprint logon
c) I will need to connect my laptop to my home PC for file replication
d) I use IBM recover/restore services
e) I use the extra IBM keys (Access IBM and others) [I don't like non-functional key s:-) )
f) I have mcafee as a virus checker
g) I do not use IBM hard disk shock protection
h) I do not use IBM update connector

Beyond this, I don't need any extra services unless they break something

With this in mind, are these services of much use ?

App layer Gateway
Computer Browser
Cryptographic Services
Dist. Link Tracking client
EvtEng
IBM HDD APS Logging service
IBM KCU service
IBM PM service
IBM User Verification Mgr (guess I need this for fingerprint logon)
Network Location Awareness
QCONSVC
Shell Hardware Detection
Spectrum24 Event Monitor
SSDP Discovery Service
Telephony (what exactly is this - do I need it if I use VoIP clients such as Skype)
WebClient
Windows User Mode Driver Framework

Thanks
arjun

There are a few there I've never seen, but for some you can get a good idea here: www.blackviper.com
X40 (2371-6EM) w/ 768 RAM
XPP SP2
DLINK DI-614+

Thanks David. I guess I will have to explore switching the IBM/intel specific services on/off and see.

I have a question too, what about window's own restore function. Do we need it when we have IBM's R&R function? I heard that function takes up a lot of resources...

I turned Windows Restore utility off, because IMO it wastes too much space. Did base backup with R&R and when needed make additional backups.

Windows restore is good for people who try lots of software and do lots of taking. You never know when the system will still work good after such stuff.

System Restore has saved me once, about a year ago, when something just wasn't right with how the system was working. I do backups of data, but not system state, so using System Restore was simple and it worked.

the blackviper site is excellent, but you might compare and find this somewhat useful too:

Don't know about all of them, but some you definitely need:

PM Service is power management
QCONSVC is needed by access connections
Shell Hardware detection is for plug-n-play (I think)
Spectrum24 is for wifi (needed by the intel driver)
SSDP is for UPnP, and you probably don't need it unless you're using a UPnP router
Telephony IS necessary for the modem to dial out!
the last two are necessary as well.

Another good services guide:

If you want to really get carried away check this out:

Thanks everyone.

I have reduced most of the standard services via these sites. Now the only things that remain are the IBM specific services - very little information in google. will experiment.

The sysinternals strip seems to be more of a 'I bet I can do it' challenge rather than a real life usage :-)
