"A duplicate name exists on the network" on startu

#1 Post by laz » Tue Sep 06, 2005 4:27 pm

I just recently moved into my dorm, and whenever I boot up my computer (this happens on my TP and my desktop) I get a message saying "A duplicate name exists on the network." This happens no matter what the name is that I use - could be a random string of numbers and letters. This doesn't seem to cause any real problems but it's kind of annoying. Anyone know what's going on?

You're changing the name on the Computer Name tab right?
You are changing the name by clicking on the Change button and restarting when prompted, not just changing the Computer Description. right?

You are using either a wired connection or a wi-fi connection but not both at the same time, right?

If the answer to all those is 'right', it's time to talk to your network admin.

I ran the network id wizard and changed the workgroup which seem to have made the problem go away.
