Lost recovery CD, how do I get another?

#1 Post by Echo » Sun Sep 25, 2005 8:56 pm

I purchased my T42p almost a year ago and I'd like to reformat my machine. It came pre-installed with SP2, but I didn't think much about the contents, and deleted C:\i386.

Now I'm trying to put together this bootable CD with SP2 slipstreamed, to re-install Windows XP. I can't find my recovery CD, nor do I have C:\i386. What can I do to get this directory back? Do I need a new recovery CD? How do I get it?

Get them through Ebay or order them from IBM (expensive!)

Lenovo T61, 6458-AB1

Alternatively, all I want to do is create this CD. Can I pull C:\i386 from the recovery partition? I've never used R&R before or the recovery partition, so I'm not sure what's on it.

If you want to reformat your ThinkPad, why not just boot up into the Rescue and Recovery workspace by pressing the blue Access IBM button at the beginning of the boot up sequence. You could then restore to 'Factory State'.

That's something I'm not so clear about. What is the 'factory state'? Does that mean with all the IBM/Lenovo software? With all the drivers installed? One of the reasons I wanted to do a fresh format was because I want to get rid of most of the 'valueadd' stuff and some of the Thinkvantage/IBM/Lenovo software that I never use.

Yes.
In your experience, is the software good about uninstalling itself? Not leaving behind registry entries and other nonsense that might still burden the system? If it is, I could just restore to factore state and uninstall what I don't need. What do you think?

Sorry my experience is nil regarding uninstalling the software as it came from the factory. I still have it all!

I have upgraded the factory software as updates became available though. :D

I will say generally speaking, it is better: not to have installed than to uninstall - to have the best performing system.

If you are goint to wipe it anyway then use the blue button to restore it to factory state. Then you can create a new set of recovery CD's and also you will have the i386 folder, the drivers folder and the IBMTOOLS fiolder that you can burn to CD's. Then you can use a regular XP cd to get a bare minimum install, use the drivers folder you burnt to install drivers and with the IBMTOOLS folder you can selectively replace whichever apps you want.
That is what I just did.

That's perfect! Are you sure restoring to factory will give me back that i386 folder? If it does, I'm all set.

Is this a language problem? "Factory state" is the state when you received your notebook and switched it on for the first time.

Yes, the i386 folder will appear again.

No, it's not a language problem. I'm sorry for being so cautious, it's just that since I lost my recovery CD, if I return to factory state and I lack the i386 folder, I'm pretty much SOL.
