Darker shadows on each side of my CYU
I have not noticed this before, but working in the park, I noticed that my machine has darker sides on each side of the screen, this seems to run up on down about 2 inches on each side. Could this be normal being outside in the park. I don't think I've noticed this at home when I'm running on AC power.
Anybody else notice anything like this?

Is this the same problem you have? http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=1327
I too have noticed that while viewing primarily solid, light colored screens, the right side of the screen on my 2379-DXU appears to be shadowy or less bright than the rest.
But I've noticed that the degree of the problem seems to be related to my viewing angle. If I adjust the screen plane to be perpendicular to my line of vision, the "blemish" basically disappears.

I've been working with a 2373-KYU 15" T42p with the 1600x1200 UXGA Flexview screen, and the shadowing is quite noticeable, unless I sit directly in front of the right-hand side of the screen where the shadow effect in question affects the screen. There is also a slightly brighter area about 4mm thick running along the entire length of the bottom of the screen, basically the bottom 1/3 or 1/4 of the Start/Taskbar. The backlighting seems uneven on the lighter solid colors as has been mentioned. It's particularly noticeable in full screen Word or IE where half the browser pane is white space, the right side is darker.
But as has been said, the Flexview color saturation and contrast is MUCH better than the 14" screens. The colors are much more accurate and nicer to read. If I could get a 14" Flexview, that would be perfect. The 14" screens are brighter, I'm looking at them side by side right now, but the 14" screens look washed out with a blue hue (it can be somewhat adjusted for by turning down the gamma and brightness for blue in the advanced display settings). Unless you have the 14" and 15" side by side, you won't know what you're missing, but if you do get a chance to do a comparison, it's no contest. Flexview wins.
Daniel.

I guess we are a picky bunch. Daniel, you have 2 T42s now?
I notice the shadowing effect when I'm viewing from a left angle, otherwise it looks perfect. Even when you can see it, it's not that bad.
I did notice the line at the bottom of the taskbar, I figured this was normal. Daniel, does the 14' have this line as well?
I'm still thinking of calling IBM, I just have not had the chance, specially that this is not bothering me that much.

I've got a few T42p 15" models courtesy of EDS for evaluation purposes.HKILP7M8 wrote:I guess we are a picky bunch. Daniel, you have 2 T42s now?

Anyhow, maybe I've been staring at these screens and comparing/contrasting too long that I'm starting to see things, or not see things. But....
When I go into the BIOS, Config|Display, and change the Default Primary Video Device to AGP (default is PCI), change the Boot Display Device to "ThinkPad LCD" (default is Analog VGA), and change Brightness from "Normal" to "High", it SEEMS to me that the right-side shadowing is much less pronounced and that the overall backlighting is a bit more even across the screen. Can you other 15" folks try changing your display settings back/forth, and using the PC Doctor video display test... in particular check the Luminance and Red, Green, Blue tests (good dead pixels test BTW)....
Anyhow, maybe this is something that will minimize the right-side shadow effect... or maybe I've just stared so long at these screens that I can tell the difference... lol
Daniel.
P.S. The 14" screen doesn't have the brighter band across the bottom of the screen, but there does seem to be a smaller band of darker color across the very top... looks almost like a shadow, but it's still there even with the LCD bezel removed...
