Rescue & Recovery won't recognize disc 1. Help!

#1 Post by fpg70 » Wed Oct 12, 2005 12:22 pm

This all started when I did a clean install of XP using the method describe at 4saad.com. To make a long story short, I now want to return my R51 back to factory state BUT-- now I'm in this terrible loop where even if I boot from the XP boot CD I made it goes right back into R&R mode and asks that I insert CD 1. I do and nothing happens. The CD 'reads' but then just stops. I've even tried the other rescue discs and still nothing. Oh, and yes, like an idiot I formatted the hidden 'backup' partition.

Basically I've got a new, unusable R51 on my hands. Help, please!

If you are trying to boot up from the Recovery Disc set (6-7 CD's that you should have made before all your surgery), first make sure that the hard drive has no partitions on it, and is just free space. I believe you need to set the security for the predesktop area in the BIOS to Normal. Now try to boot from the Recovery Disc set. It is my understanding that it will reboot 2 or 3 times before the installation is complete. The hidden partition is installed first.

If you are trying to boot up from your Windows CD that you made by method at 4saad.com, some else will have to help.

As a last resort, you can buy the Recovery Disc set from Lenovo. I hear the price is around $50 US.

I think I've got things working now. Not sure exactly what I did but I rebooted the boot disc, copied files from D: (R&R boot cd) to C: at the R&R menus screen, prompted a few times, and now Progress bar reads: 'system restore in progress...' and is reading the CDs. Guess I kind of stumbled my way into it. :?
